US President Donald Trump has given a big statement about India. On Friday (September 05), he said that America has lost India and Russia at the hands of China. A few hours later, he made it clear that he is very disappointed with India because India is still buying a large amount of oil from Russia. Trump claimed that this is why his government has imposed a big tariff (fee) on India.

What did Trump say on relationship with PM Modi?

When Trump was asked, why did America lose India with China? So Trump said, “I don’t think we have lost India, but I was very disappointed that India is buying so much oil from Russia. I had also told this to India. After this we put a very big tariff on India, 50 percent big.”

However, amid criticism, Trump also underlined his personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, “I have a very good relationship with Modi ji. He is a great person. He came here a few months ago.”

Trump also remembered PM Modi’s recent White House visit. He told, “We went to the daily garden, but the grass was completely wet there. It was a perfect place for the press conference. Then I said that let’s use the beautiful white stone instead of the White House, and it was very much liked by everyone.”

Always ready to improve relations with India: Trump

When the media asked if he was ready to rectify relations with India again, Trump replied, “Yes, I am always ready. Modi ji is my good friend and will live. He is a very good Prime Minister. Just at this time I do not like some of his things, but India and America are strong and special. There is no matter of concern.”

Trump hoped on business talks

Trump also said that business talks with many countries including India are going well and the results are coming positive. He said that the relations between America and India are in a little difficult period. He says that America has lost India and Russia in “influence of China”.

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. This decision of Trump is being opposed in his own country. Former US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jack Sulivan has said that President Donald Trump has put more business pressure on India by applying 50 percent tariff. Sulivan believes that due to Trump’s policies, India is gradually leaning towards China.

Jack Sulivan said in a podcast, ‘When he talks to leaders of other countries, he says that America is no longer worth trusting. Many countries consider America to be the biggest problem, while China is coming forward like a responsible and reliable country. He said that earlier America’s image was strong, but now China’s popularity is growing rapidly and America’s credibility is becoming weak.

India is looking towards China in compulsion: Sulivan

Giving the example of India, Sulivan said, “The attempt to form a deep and permanent relationship with India was going on with the consent of both parties, but Trump made such a big business attack on India that now Indian leaders have to say that maybe we have to go to Beijing and sit with China, so that a balance can be made against America.”

50% tariff shocks Indian exports

The Trump administration has implemented a 50% tariff on India from 27 August. This is the highest tariff imposed on any country. It is believed that this will have a profound impact on India’s economy and employment. Trump said the reason for the additional 25% fee was said by India to buy oil from Russia. This heavy tax is expected to affect India’s clothes, jewelery and mechanical equipment industry the most.

Trump’s ‘resentment’ reason?

Meanwhile, a report by American investment bank Jefferies claimed that Trump’s personal resentment is the real reason for imposing tariffs on India. In fact, in May, Trump wanted to mediate the India Pakistan dispute, but India refused. Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley has given a clear warning that the US-India relations are on the verge of breaking up. He said that if America wants to rein in China’s growing ambitions, then it will have to give priority to relations with India.

In an article published in Newsweek on Wednesday (20 August 2025), Haley wrote that America should not ignore the most important thing that our target is China. America must have a friend as India to face him.

Controversy over tariffs and dandruff
Haley’s statement comes at a time when there has been an increased tension between America and India over trade disputes and Russian oil imports. President Donald Trump has imposed 25% mutual fee and 25% additional tariffs on India, which will be applicable from August 27. Haley admitted that Russia is getting financial help for Ukraine War due to India buying oil, but at the same time he warned that it would be a strategic mistake to treat India like an enemy.

India’s important role in stopping China
Haley said that India is the only country to combat China’s dominance in Asia. India has the ability to manufacture on a scale like China, which can help America to meet the demand for its supply chain through India instead of China. India’s strong defense relations with countries like America and Israel make it important for the safety of the world. Haley believes that India will weaken China’s ambitions in the coming time.

Trump-Modi conversation appeal
Haley suggested that President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should talk directly to remove misunderstandings between the two countries. He said that if this does not happen, China will take advantage of this rift. Haley referred to her article in 1982 from Indira Gandhi’s words of US President Ronald Reagan. He wrote that America and India can sometimes adopt different routes, but their destination should remain the same. Haley reiterated that America needs to keep friendship with India to face China’s challenge.
