Russia Sanctions Bill: America can impose tariffs up to 500 percent on countries purchasing crude oil from Russia. US President Donald Trump has supported the proposed bill imposing strict sanctions on Russia. If this bill is passed by the US Parliament, it can have a direct impact on countries like India and China, which buy large quantities of oil from Russia.

Bill prepared to increase pressure on Russia

Under the proposed ‘Sanctioning Russia Act’, the US President will have the power to impose tariffs of up to 500 percent on imports from countries purchasing Russian oil, gas and petroleum products. The purpose of this step is to put pressure on Russia’s energy income and to tighten its economic grip on the Ukraine war.

Trump said – there is a good possibility of the bill becoming law

While talking to reporters in the Oval Office, Donald Trump said that the Russia sanctions bill has a good chance of becoming law. He also indicated that the option of imposing secondary sanctions on India and China is still open. However, he said that the final discussion on this has not taken place yet.

White House also announced support

The White House told news agency ANI that President Trump supports this bill. This bill was prepared jointly by late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal. Graham had said many times before that India and China are Russia’s biggest customers for energy purchases and Russia can be weakened by putting economic pressure on them.

Also read: India issues non-bailable warrant against Lashkar leader terrorist Hafiz Saeed, now case will be heard in this court

India may be affected

In recent months, India has reduced its imports of Russian crude following trade talks with the US and US sanctions on some Russian energy producers. Despite this, India is still among the major countries buying oil from Russia. In such a situation, if this bill becomes law, it may have an impact on India-US trade relations.

Senate approval still pending

Currently this bill is under consideration in the US Senate. Only after it gets approval there, it will be able to take the form of law. At the same time, some leaders of the Republican Party have also opposed this proposal, due to which everyone is keeping an eye on the process of its passage.

US President Donald Trump has given a big statement regarding the trade agreement with India. He said that this agreement has completely changed compared to before and now India will give tariff to America, while America will not give any tariff to India. Trump said, ‘Nothing has changed. They will give tariffs and we will not give tariffs. Describing this as a contrary arrangement to the old structure, he said, ‘The deal with India is that they will pay the tariff. It was not like this earlier. We have overturned it.

According to PTI report, Trump also personally praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, ‘I think Prime Minister Modi is a wonderful gentleman and a great person, but he was much smarter than America. India was harming us. However, he also said that now the new arrangement is a fair deal.

Supreme Court rejects President’s interpretation on IEEPA

Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court has raised questions on the decision of the Trump administration, in which it was claimed that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) gives the President the right to impose tariffs. Chief Justice John Roberts, citing an earlier decision, said that the President must show parliamentary approval to take extraordinary measures like tariffs. He said in clear words, ‘The President cannot do this.’ The court accepted that imposing unilateral tariffs under the guise of IEEPA could be interference in the jurisdiction of Congress and is a violation.

Challenge of states and businessmen

The decision came after legal challenges were filed by businesses affected by the tariffs and 12 states. Most of these states are ruled by the Democratic Party.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reacted to the comments made by the US President regarding PM Modi’s political career. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said that he will take appropriate action on this old viral video. Trump had made such remarks jokingly in October last year amid increased tension between the two countries after the trade deal and purchase of Russian oil.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while replying to the media’s question related to the video in the weekly press conference, said that he has not seen the video. But if there is any such video then appropriate action will be taken.

Jaiswal said in a stern comment, ‘I have not seen the video. However, if there is any such video, whether true or false, we will take appropriate action on it.

What did US President Donald Trump say?

Trump had said this about PM Modi’s career on October 15, 2025. He had praised PM Modi a lot during that time. He had claimed that India has assured the US to stop buying oil from Russia.

Apart from this, Trump had said that PM Modi is a great man. Along with this, the PM was described as a leader who has stood the test of time. He had stressed that he loves PM Modi and Trump. After thinking for a few seconds, Trump quickly clarified that the word love should not be taken differently. He does not want to ruin PM Modi’s political career.

He further said, ‘Modi is a great man. He loves Trump… I don’t want you to interpret the word love in a different way. I don’t want to ruin his political career. Trump said these things jokingly.

Gave a strange statement after congratulating PM Modi

This video of Trump came a few days after wishing PM Modi on his birthday on September 17, when relations between the two countries were slowly getting back on track. After the recent trade deal and tariff reduction, relations between the two countries have moved towards strengthening.

The year 2025 was a very tough and historic year for the Indian Rupee. Market volatility along with US protectionism and India’s macroeconomic pressures combined to create a “perfect storm”. Due to the aggressive trade policies of the Trump administration, tariffs on India reached 50% by August, with the 25% surcharge on Russian oil being a big blow.

India’s “China Plus One” advantage was weakened by comparatively lower tariffs on Vietnam and China. Its impact was clearly visible on labour-intensive sectors like textiles, gems & jewelery and marine exports.

Rupee crossed psychological levels of ₹90–₹91 in December 2025. FII outflows, rising trade deficit and RBI’s market-driven stance made the rupee Asia’s worst performer. Imported inflation increased and put pressure on GDP growth by 0.3–0.5%.

However, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India, export diversification and possible India-US BTA raised new hopes for 2026.

US-India Tariffs: Three US lawmakers have taken a big step against the heavy tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imports from India. Three members of the US House of Representatives introduced a resolution on Friday, the purpose of which is to end Trump’s national emergency declaration.

Under this emergency, up to 50 percent duty was imposed on goods coming from India. Lawmakers called these tariffs illegal and said they were hurting American workers, consumers and India-US relations.

Which MPs presented the proposal

This proposal has been introduced by MPs Deborah Ross, Mark VC and Raja Krishnamurthy. This step has been taken at a time when earlier a bipartisan proposal has been brought in the US Senate related to banning the President’s emergency powers to eliminate similar tariffs imposed on Brazil and increase import duties.

Demand to remove additional duties imposed on India

According to the statement issued, this proposal demands cancellation of the additional 25 percent secondary duty imposed on India, which was imposed on August 27, 2025. This duty was imposed on top of the reciprocal tariffs already in place, increasing the total import duty on many Indian products to 50 percent. This action was taken under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

North Carolina’s economy is deeply linked to India

Congresswoman Deborah Ross said, ‘North Carolina’s economy is deeply linked to India through trade, investment and a vibrant Indian American community.’ He said that Indian companies have invested more than one billion dollars in North Carolina, creating thousands of jobs in sectors like life sciences and technology. At the same time, manufacturers from the state export goods worth hundreds of millions of dollars to India every year.

Burden on American consumers too: VC

Congressman Mark VC said that India is an important cultural, economic and strategic partner of America. He alleged that these illegal tariffs are like additional taxes on ordinary American citizens. According to the VC, ‘These fees are burdening the common people of North Texas, who are already struggling with rising inflation.’

‘Tariffs are harmful and counterproductive’

Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamurthy called these tariffs ‘adverse and harmful’. He said this is disrupting the supply chain, hurting American workers and increasing prices for consumers. Krishnamurthy stressed, ‘Eliminating these tariffs will help strengthen economic and security cooperation between the US and India.’

Democrats’ effort to challenge Trump’s trade policy

This proposal is part of a broader effort by the Democratic Party in Congress, under which Trump’s unilateral trade policies are being challenged and efforts are being made to strengthen America’s relations with India.

Demand to reverse the policy has been made earlier also

Earlier in October, Deborah Ross, Mark VC and Raja Krishnamurthy, along with MP Ro Khanna and 19 other members of Congress, had appealed to the President to withdraw the tariffs imposed on India and improve the deteriorating bilateral relations. The statement issued said, ‘Eliminating the tariffs imposed by Trump on India is part of a broader effort by Congress to reclaim its constitutional rights on trade and to stop the misuse of emergency powers by the President.’

Buying oil from Russia became the reason for tariff

It is noteworthy that in August, President Trump had decided to impose 25 percent tariff on Indian products from August 1. A few days later, it was increased by another 25 percent, taking the total fee to 50 percent. The Trump administration had cited India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia as the reason for this and claimed that this provides financial help to Moscow in the Ukraine war.

Foreign brokerage firm Nomura has given a big update on the India-US trade deal. The firm has estimated that the 50 percent US tariff applicable on India may be revised to only 20 percent. Six rounds of talks have taken place between India and America regarding the trade deal, but no final decision has been taken yet. However, US President Donald Trump has said many times that a positive deal is going to happen between the two countries.

Nomura said that the outcome of the trade agreement between America and India still remains uncertain. The firm says that despite positive signals from both the countries, the agreement has not been signed yet. However, the firm has expressed confidence that soon a deal will be reached between India and America and the American tariff imposed on India will be reduced from 50 percent to around 20 percent. The foreign brokerage firm has also said that the stock market is hopeful that a trade deal will be reached between the two countries by the end of the year.

Nomura has also changed its estimate regarding India’s GDP growth rate. It has increased the growth rate from 7 percent to 7.5 percent for fiscal year 2026, but has maintained the 25 basis points cut for December. Recently the Finance Ministry has said that India has grown with a GDP growth rate of 8.2 percent from July to September.

America has imposed 50 percent tariff on Indian exports. After assuming power in January, Donald Trump had imposed heavy tariffs first on China and then on India, after which it was believed that it could have a big impact on India’s economy. However, big institutions like IMF had said that American tariffs will not be able to affect India’s economy much. The firm estimated that India’s economy would remain stable. Now the whole world is surprised to see this growth rate of India.

Donald Trump Tariff News: On one hand, there is turmoil at the global level due to the tariff policy of US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Trump has withdrawn his decision of 100 percent tariff imposed on generic medicines. After this decision, Indian pharma companies have heaved a sigh of relief. Nearly half of the generic medicines supplied to America are exported from India. In such a situation, Indian companies will get a lot of benefit from it.

Besides, American citizens who are dependent on pharma companies of India and other countries for such medicines will also benefit from it. Due to 100 percent tariff, a huge jump in the prices of specific generic medicines was expected in the American market. According to information received in a report, India alone exports 47 percent of the generic medicines supplied to America.

Demand for Indian medicines in American market

The export rate of Indian medicines to America is increasing rapidly. Exports of Indian pharma companies to reach $30 billion in the financial year 2025. In which a growth of about 31 percent is being seen every year. The demand for Indian generic medicines has also increased in the American market. The direct effect of which is visible in the pharma export data. After this decision of Trump, it is expected that the business of generic medicines will grow faster. India is such a big producer of medicines that it is known as the pharmacy of the world.

Trump had announced 100 percent tariff

Recently, Trump had announced through social media that America will impose 100 percent tariff on certain medicines. If a company produces medicines in America, then this tariff rate will not apply to them. After which a decline in the shares of pharma companies was seen.

However, American citizens are largely dependent on Indian medicines. Many medicines like diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol and antibiotics are exported from India in large quantities. On average, American citizens have to spend less for medicines sent from India. Therefore, demand for Indian medicines remains in the American market.

Us tarifs on pharmaceuticals: US President Donald Trump is taking one step after the other, which are constantly becoming troublesome for Americans. On the one hand, while the US court termed Tariff as illegal, on the other hand Trump is not ready to withdraw from his move. Now pharmaceutical companies have come in their target.

According to news agency AP, the Trump administration has decided to put heavy tariffs on imported medicines. These rates will be up to 200 percent on some medicines. President Trump’s effort is to increase the scope of tariff to reach the pharmaceutical sector after auto and steel. This will directly affect those medicines, which were not yet imposed customs. That is, this decision of Trump can affect the general American public.

Why American people in worry?

Experts believe that the supply chain will be affected on one side due to heavy tariffs on medicines, then the risk of lack of medicines will increase on the other side. The Trump administration is using section 232 of the Trade Examination Act 1962 to justify its move. It is being argued that to avoid lack of drugs, it is necessary to increase production at the domestic level, so that the situation like Kovid-19 is not again.

Recently, in the US-Europe trading decision, up to 15 percent tariffs were imposed on some European goods, including medicines. Despite this, the Trump administration is preparing to put more tariffs.

What will be the immediate effect?

It has been suggested by the White House that about one and a half years should be given to apply higher tariffs. Many companies have already increased imports and have increased the prices of medicines.

Jeffer’s analyst David Windle warned that this decision could not be implemented before 2026 or before 2027. The short -term effect will be that the lack of drugs will increase. Whereas in a long time it will directly affect the cost and supply.
