US Taiwan Defense Deal: There are signs of increasing tension between China and the United States regarding Taiwan. China has long claimed Taiwan as its own and strongly dislikes support for Taiwan by any country. In such a situation, the proposed big defense agreement between America and Taiwan may anger Beijing.

According to a report by news agency Reuters, a defense package worth about $14 billion for Taiwan, including advanced interceptor missiles, is ready for the approval of US President Donald Trump. According to sources, this deal can be approved after Trump’s visit to China this month.

Why might China be angry?

Taiwan is constantly facing military pressure from China. In such a situation, this defense deal is being considered as the biggest defense agreement till date. It is believed that this deal will strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities, which may increase China’s resentment.

According to sources, President Trump’s visit to Beijing is proposed between March 31 and April 2. Meanwhile, this defense agreement has been finalized and the possibility of its official announcement is being expressed after Trump’s return.

Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping had said in February that caution should be taken regarding defense deals with Taiwan. This step of the Trump administration indicates that America wants to maintain its strategic relations with Taiwan and can also increase military aid to it.

Strategic meaning of the deal

Experts believe that on one hand this deal could be an attempt to create a balance of power in the Asia-Pacific region, while on the other hand it is also being considered a strategy to send a message about China’s growing influence. China’s Foreign Ministry has told news agency Reuters that the Chinese government will unitedly oppose the move by the United States to sell arms to Taiwan.

China says that arms sales to Taiwan could pose a threat to regional peace and stability. It is noteworthy that China has been claiming Taiwan as its share for a long time and has been continuously demanding America to stop selling arms to Taiwan. Beijing believes that such defense deals are against the principle of “One China Policy” and may increase tension between the two countries. At the same time, America remains firm on its policy of providing defense equipment to Taiwan for its security.

US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China would not attack Taiwan as long as he is President. Trump gave this statement in an interview to Fox News. This claim has come at a time when tension between China and Taiwan remains constant.

Trump’s statement
Trump said in the interview, “President Xi told me that as long as you are President, I will never do this. I told him, ‘I appreciate it.’ But he also said that he is very patient and China is also very patient. ” Trump further said that he is confident that there is no possibility of attacking Taiwan during his tenure.

Trump-shee conversation
The first confirmation of Trump’s second presidential tenure between Trump and Xi Jinping took place in June. Even in April, Trump had said that Xi had called him, but he did not clarify when the conversation took place.

China’s stance and Taiwan’s objection
China considers Taiwan as its part and has repeatedly said that it will “re-integrate” this island under any circumstances, for this, force will also be used if needed. On the other hand, Taiwan strongly opposes China’s claim of sovereignty and considers itself an independent democratic rule.

America and Taiwan relations
Although the US is Taiwan’s largest international supporter and main supplier of weapons, there is no formal diplomatic relations between the two countries. China has always objected to this role of America.

Chinese Embassy response
The Chinese Embassy in Washington said on Friday that Taiwan’s issue is the most important and sensitive subject of China-America relations. Embassy spokesman Liu Pengu said in a statement, “The US government should follow one-China policy and three joint releases of China-America. Careful matters related to Taiwan should be handled carefully and maintaining peace and stability in China-America relations and Taiwan Strait.”
