Mexico tariff on India: America has already imposed a huge tariff of 50 percent on the import of Indian goods. Out of this, 25 percent tariff has been imposed as a penalty for purchasing oil from Russia. In this sequence, Mexico has also announced to impose 50 percent tariff on many Asian countries including India.

Mexico’s Senate has approved it. The purpose of Mexico increasing the tariff in this way is to strengthen its local industry. Due to this decision of Mexico, up to 50 percent tariff will be imposed on auto, auto parts, textile, clothing, plastic and steel. Apart from this, the tariff on most goods can be increased to 35 percent.

Earlier there was a proposal to increase tariff on 1400 goods

However, this proposal passed in the Senate has been a little softer than the earlier draft, in which it was said that the tariff would be increased on about 1,400 import lines. In the new proposal, duty on two-thirds of these has been reduced. The special thing is that this step has been taken despite the opposition of China and local business groups, which indicates a change in Mexico’s trade policy as it will have to face the upcoming United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) review, which will start from July 1, 2026.

What is USMCA?

USMCA is a free trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada, which came into effect from July 1, 2020. According to Article 34.7 of the agreement, it is necessary to review it every six years to ensure that it is beneficial for all three countries. If it passes the review then it can be extended till 2036.

Pressure on local industries will reduce

The Mexican government says that this step will strengthen the domestic industry because the pressure on local companies will be reduced due to cheap imports. But this will deal a severe blow to exporters and local business groups of those countries, who were not expecting the tariff to increase so much. The cost of imports will increase significantly if Mexico increases tariffs. Its impact will be especially severe on those countries which do not have any trade deal with Mexico such as China, India, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia.

In America, President Donald Trump has indicated that he is considering imposing new tariffs on many agricultural products including rice coming from India. This statement has come at a time when efforts are being made to take the trade agreement between India and America forward again. The Trump administration believes that India and some other countries are ‘dumping cheap agricultural goods’ into the US market, causing losses to local farmers. This news can be a shock for those Indian farmers and exporters, for whom the US market has been the largest global buyer.

A major reason for stalling of trade deals is the dispute over agricultural imports.
The ongoing trade talks between India and America have been stuck for months and the main reason for this is the dispute over agricultural products. According to the Economic Times report, America wants India to give more space to dairy, meat, soya and agricultural products in its market, while India argues that this will have a deep impact on its small farmers. Due to this, the Trump government has already increased tariffs on many Indian products. Despite several rounds of talks between India and America, the trade agreement has not progressed. The biggest reason for this is disputes related to agriculture and food imports.

The things on which Trump is adamant-

Entry of GMO crops in India
America wants India to allow Genetically Modified (GMO) technology in crops like corn, soybean and wheat. But Indian scientists, farmers’ organizations and policy makers warn that this could lead to the extinction of local crop species, affect biodiversity and have serious health implications in the long run. That is why India still maintains a ban on GMO crops.

Import of American dairy products
America wants India to allow American milk, cheese, butter and ghee in its market. But India is the largest milk producing country in the world and more than 3 crore small farmers here are dependent on dairy. Apart from this, there is also a big religious and cultural objection – in America, enzymes made from animal bones are added to the food of cows. India considers it ‘non-veg milk’ and there is opposition to it on religious grounds also.

Demand to reduce import duty on agricultural products
America wants India to reduce taxes on agricultural products like wheat, rice, soybean, corn, apple and grapes, but India keeps high tariffs on these to protect its farmers so that Indian production is not affected by cheap imports.

India’s stance – no compromise with farmers and food security
Despite pressure from many countries including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and America, the Indian government is not in favor of changing its food security policy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, India provides free food grains to 80 crore people. The poverty rate in India was 27% in 2011-12. Which has reduced to 5.3% in 2022-23. Therefore, India argues that agricultural self-reliance and food security are part of the national policy and cannot be changed under foreign pressure.

Amidst America’s new tariff policy and changes in global trade equations, India has now started seeing Russia’s huge market as a new opportunity. The visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India has further strengthened these possibilities. The business world is believing that India-Russia trade can reach new heights in the coming times.

Amidst increasing trade uncertainty in America, India’s eyes are now fixed on Russia. Brijesh Goyal, Chairman of Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), the country’s leading business organization, told the ABP Live team that India currently exports about 5 billion dollars to Russia, but this figure is much less than Russia’s capacity. At the same time, China is maintaining a strong hold on the Russian market by exporting about 115 billion dollars.

Expectations increased due to Putin’s visit

Goyal believes that President Putin’s visit to India has given rise to new possibilities for trade between the two countries. He says that in the near future, India’s exports to Russia can increase to 10 billion dollars annually. Starting trade in local currency can also accelerate this growth.

From smartphones to medicines – still a big gap

India has become the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer, yet India exports only $75 million worth of mobile phones to Russia. India has a strong hold in the field of medicines, yet medicines worth only $245 million are sent to Russia. Not only this, India’s export in textile sector is only 29 million dollars, which is considered very low compared to its potential.

Business can increase in many sectors

Brijesh Goyal said that there is huge potential for India in Russia in electronics, machinery, textiles, pharma and many other sectors. He also said that starting transactions in indigenous currency will make business easier and the penetration of Indian products in Russia can become stronger.

US tariff shock and Russia’s option

CTI believes that India’s exports to the US market have been affected after the Trump administration imposed 50% import duty on India. In such a situation, Russia can become a strong and reliable option, where there is a large consumer base for Indian goods.

New avenues will open in defense and maritime sectors also

India has been an important partner of Russia in the defense sector for a long time. Goyal said that while Russia provides defense equipment to India, there can also be a possibility of their production units in India in the future. On the other hand, Russia is showing increasing interest in importing Indian marine products, which will give further impetus to bilateral trade.

Trump Tariff: America imposed 50 percent tariff on India in the month of August. Of these, 25 percent tariff was imposed as a penalty for purchasing crude oil from Russia. This tariff of US President Donald Trump also affected industries ranging from textile to leather, jewelery and seafood. However, Trump has said that he will reduce the import duty of more than 200 agricultural and farm products by November. Due to this, the expectations of Indian exports have increased again.

Which products did Trump give discount on?

tea and coffee

Spices like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper, cloves and cumin.

Cashews and many other types of dry fruits or tree nuts.

Processed food, all types of seasonal fruits, fruit pulp, fruit juice etc.

Talks on trade deal between the two also

Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO) says that the exemption in import duty can benefit Indian exports worth about $ 2.5-3 billion. This step can also be seen as a positive signal in the ongoing talks regarding trade deal between India and America. However, at present there is no exemption of any kind on prawns, basmati rice, gems and jewellery, clothes, these will continue to attract full tariff. Trump has not included many fresh and sour fruits and bananas in this list, hence the scope of exemption seems limited to many experts.

Why did Trump take this decision?

Trump took the decision to withdraw tariffs on selected goods because due to tariffs, many things had become very expensive in the American markets. Due to this, the general public there is facing problems, they have to spend more than before to buy food items. In such a situation, a need was felt to keep things affordable, due to which the idea of making imports cheaper was thought of. This is also good news for Indian exporters, who will get a chance to sell their goods again in a big market like America.

The US-China tariff war that has been going on for months finally seems to be coming to an end. China has bowed down after US President Donald Trump’s strict tariff warnings. After nearly six years, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping sat face to face in Busan city of South Korea and after a meeting of about two hours, both the countries agreed on many important issues.

After the meeting, Trump said that he had a great conversation with Xi Jinping and now America will reduce the tariff imposed on China from 57% to 47%. In return, China has agreed to crack down on illegal fentanyl drugs, resume purchasing American soybeans and lift the ban on the export of rare earth minerals.

China bows down, America benefits on three fronts
America has got three big victories from this agreement. America will benefit greatly from this-
first advantage – Due to reduction in tariff, industrial and electronic products coming from China will become cheaper, which will reduce the production cost of American companies and will help in controlling inflation.
second advantage – China has promised to resume purchasing American soybeans. With this, American farmers will get back a market worth billions of dollars.
third advantage – China has agreed to lift the ban on export of rare earth minerals, which will provide great relief to the American defense industry.

Good news for American farmers

Before the trade war between America and China started, China was the largest buyer of American soybean. In the year 2025, America had exported soybean worth a total of 24.5 billion dollars, out of which only China was the buyer of 12.5 billion dollars, but after the increase in tariff, China had stopped buying American soybean. Now after this new deal, American farmers will again get a bigger market, which will increase their income and reduce the losses in the agriculture sector.

Agreement on ‘Rare Earth’ – Strategic Win for America
Trump’s biggest victory is considered to be agreeing to lift the restrictions imposed by China on rare earth minerals. In fact, these 17 special metals are used in smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles, batteries, radar systems, missiles and even jet engines. China produces about 60% of these minerals and processes 90% of them in the world. With the lifting of the ban on this, the American defense industry will no longer face shortage of materials required for equipment like F-35 jets, missile guidance systems and drones.

After the meeting, Trump said in the press conference, this is a new and wonderful beginning in US-China relations. We have agreed on many issues and it will be beneficial for both the countries.

Crude Oil Price Jumps: Crude oil prices have seen a rise following new US sanctions against Moscow’s major oil companies and reports of a review by Indian oil companies on purchasing cheap crude oil from Russia. According to Reuters report, an increase of about 3 percent was recorded in the price of crude oil on Thursday.

According to reports, America, which is trying to stop the Ukraine war, has imposed sanctions on two big Russian oil producing companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. After this, Indian refiners are reconsidering their plans to buy cheap oil from Moscow.

Rise in crude oil prices

Brent Crude Futures: $64.71 per barrel, an increase of $2.12 or 3.4%. While US West Texas Intermediate (WTI): $60.59 per barrel, an increase of $2.09 or 3.6%. It is noteworthy that from 2022, India is buying large quantities of crude oil from Russia. During the first nine months of this year, about 1.7 million barrels (17 lakh barrels) of oil were imported daily.

Reports say that Reliance Industries, the biggest buyer of cheap oil from Russia, has considered cutting oil purchases or stopping imports. However, most of the Indian government oil companies buy Russian oil through intermediaries, which will reduce the impact of the direct ban.

America’s new warning

America has warned that if Moscow does not agree to a ceasefire, new steps will be taken against Russia. Last week, Britain also imposed sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil, while the European Union approved the 19th sanctions package. Under this, there will be a complete ban on Russian LNG imports. However, market experts believe that the effect of this rise in crude oil will not last long.

US President Donald Trump warned that his government is considering ending edible oil trade with China. Responding to this threat, China said that no one becomes a winner from a trade war. China’s Foreign Ministry said that trade-related differences are not in the interest of any party.

China replied to Trump

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, “The two sides should resolve issues through dialogue on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit. China’s position on China-US economic and trade issues is very clear.”

China has refused to buy American soybeans. Due to retaliatory tariffs on American goods, soybeans became expensive for Chinese importers, due to which Dragon has started buying soybeans from South America.

China’s move amounts to an economic attack on US: Trump

China has been the largest buyer of American soybeans. On this, Trump said that China’s restrictions on rare earth, soybean and other things are like a direct economic attack on America. “We are considering eliminating cooking oil and other aspects of trade with China as retaliation,” Trump said.

‘Control of rare earth minerals is necessary for world peace’

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that our leaders have made their position clear on recent policies. China described these controls as necessary for world peace and regional stability. Last week, China tightened controls on the export of rare earth minerals required for the manufacture of high-tech products, due to which Trump announced a 100 percent tariff on Beijing.

Last May, when America imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, China stopped purchasing soybeans, which created a big crisis for American farmers. America exported soybeans worth about $24.5 billion last year, out of which China bought soybeans worth $12.5 billion.

China has defended the decision to curb exports of rare minerals and other such items, calling it a legitimate step to safeguard global peace and warned the US that it will take ‘concrete measures’ if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat of imposing 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese exports.

China on Thursday announced new restrictions on the export of rare minerals, lithium batteries and technologies and equipment related to the mining and processing of rare mineral-based materials. These restrictions, which took effect immediately, also apply to foreign transfer of production technologies.

trade war between two big economies

Beijing said that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the concern that some foreign companies are using materials obtained from China for military purposes. Reacting to China’s move, US President Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent duty on Chinese goods from November 1, following which the trade war between the world’s two largest economies has resumed.

Responding to a question related to Trump’s threat, the Chinese Commerce Ministry in a statement on Sunday (October 12, 2025) accused America of exaggerating the concept of national security.

China’s decision will depend on America’s decision

The statement said, ‘Deliberately threatening to impose higher tariffs is not the right way to reach a rapprochement with China. China’s stance on the trade war is the same as before. We don’t want a trade war, but we’re not afraid of it either. If America insists on going on the wrong path, China will definitely take concrete steps to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

Donald Trump Pharma Tariff: US President Donald Trump announced to impose 100 percent tariffs on the import of branded and patent drugs last week. It is expected to be implemented from October 1, 2025. Companies were excluded from the purview of this tariff, who are building their manufacturing plant in America. Its purpose is to encourage domestic production of drugs in America and eliminate dependence on foreign companies. However, even after the passing of October 1, this tariff did not apply, why? Let’s know

Why the delay in implementing tariffs?

The reason behind this delay is that Trump’s government wants to bring their manufacturing on track by interacting with pharmaceutical companies before putting tariffs. Also, proposals to reduce the prices of medicines of many companies are also being considered. It has been said by the White House that since the talks are still going on, there is a delay in implementing the tariff, but can be implemented in future. That is, its danger is not completely averted yet. If Trump’s 100 percent pharma tariff is implemented, medicines imported from abroad will become expensive for patients. Axperts also say that this may spoil the relationship between trade partners and can cause interruptions in the global supply chain.

Fizzer deal with Trump administration

Meanwhile, Pharmazer, a large company in the pharmaceutical industry, has said to invest $ 70 billion in the US under a deal with the US government. Also promised to reduce the prices of medicines. This shows that the company is trying to increase the scope of its work in America.
Preparation for launch website in the name of Trump

According to a report, in the meantime, Trump’s government is thinking about launching a website that will mention the medicine given on a discount. With the help of this website, patients will help in purchasing medicines at discounts directly from companies. It can be named ‘Trumprx’.
Former US Ambassador Tim Romer has said that the plan by President Donald Trump to impose a new and heavy H-1B visa fee on Indians, can once again become an issue of talks after the Indo-US trade agreement. This step of the Trump administration has come amid strictness on immigration, which will have a profound impact on Indian IT companies and skilled professionals. The US has already increased 50% tariff and now the proposed 1 million visa fee can make American dreams difficult for Indian students and professionals. However, India is currently studying the impact of this decision.

In a conversation with NDTV, Romer admitted that the step could interrupt the relationship between the two countries, but hoped that the visa issue would be reconsidered after the business talks proceed. He also said that it is possible that the court or the US Congress should stop this decision, because the Congress has the right to decide the number of H-1B visas.

Romer said this big thing

He insisted that giving H-1B visas to Indian students and professionals is also beneficial for America. These students start new companies in the US by acquiring PhD and jobs, which are called ‘Unicorns’ and they create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Citing a study, Romer said that about 25% of the new technology jobs are made by students of Indian origin, who later become CEOs and strengthen the American economy.

India has also been emphasizing the aspect that H-1B visa holders strengthen innovation, technological development and people’s relations with people. The Ministry of External Affairs said that policies will be evaluated keeping in mind the benefits.
