A day after US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of an additional 25 percent tariff on countries doing business with Iran, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has termed the decision as very serious and worrying. Tharoor warned that if this tariff is fully implemented, India may have to pay up to 75 percent tariff for exports to America, which will make it almost impossible for Indian companies to survive in the American market.

Shashi Tharoor said that India is already facing 25 percent tariff imposed by America, which is higher than other countries in South Asia. Tharoor said in an interview to ANI that they are already facing 25% tariff. Apart from this, there is an additional 25% tariff related to sanctions on Russia. Now under the sanctions related to Iran the tariff will be 75 percent. To be honest, at 75 percent tariff no Indian company will be able to export to America.

Labour-intensive industries are most affected.

Tharoor expressed concern that many of India’s labour-intensive industries would be badly affected by the decision, including gems and jewellery, marine products, shrimp and leather industries. He said that these are the same areas in which India competes with Bangladesh and other South Asian countries and already India has to face high tariffs.

Only pharma sector can survive: Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor said that if the new tariffs are fully implemented, only a limited number of sectors like pharmaceuticals will be able to continue exporting to the US, because they are not currently under major restrictions. After this, perhaps only those products will be left which have not yet come under the restrictions. He further said that he does not know what stand the Indian government is taking on this issue, but according to him this situation is very serious.

Emphasis on the need for India-US trade agreement

Tharoor appealed to the newly appointed US Ambassador to make serious efforts for a trade agreement between India and America, so that the economic relations between the two countries are not harmed further. He said that if diplomatic initiative is not taken soon, Indian exporters will have to suffer huge losses.

Diplomatic talks continue amid tension

Amid ups and downs in India-US trade relations, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke on phone with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday. During this, both the leaders discussed issues like bilateral trade, nuclear energy and defense cooperation. Describing this conversation as a good discussion, Jaishankar said that both the sides will remain in touch in future also.

Oil has always been not only a source of energy for India, but it has also been an important pillar of its foreign policy and economic stability. For a country with a population of 140 crore, the question of energy security is directly related to inflation, growth rate and social stability, but as energy trade is becoming a weapon in global politics, India’s oil import is also no longer just an economic decision. The US’s threats of tariffs and sanctions on its trading partners related to Russia and Iran have further increased this sensitivity.

After the Ukraine war, India gave relief to its domestic economy by purchasing cheap crude oil from Russia, but now there is strict monitoring and pressure from America regarding this decision. On the other hand, the American proposal to open Venezuelan oil to India is being considered a major strategic turning point in this entire incident. The question is whether India will be able to take independent decisions for its energy needs or will it have to change its policy according to the global balance of power?

India’s energy dependence and strategic compulsion

India is the third largest oil importer in the world. About 90 percent of the country’s crude oil needs are met through imports. Oil plays an important role in every sector like transportation, power generation, industry, agriculture and logistics. In such a situation, even a slight fluctuation in oil prices in the global market has a direct impact on inflation, rupee exchange rate and government subsidies in India. Before the Ukraine war, India’s oil imports were mainly dependent on Middle-Eastern countries, but after the war, due to Western sanctions, Russia provided crude oil at concessional rates. India took advantage of this opportunity and gave priority to economic stability along with energy security. This decision is making India a sensitive partner in the eyes of America today.

Oil purchases from Russia and US tariff pressure

After the Ukraine war, America and its allies imposed comprehensive economic sanctions on Russia. Although India did not formally participate in these sanctions, it faced constant diplomatic pressure to buy oil from Russia. According to reports, India has purchased crude oil worth more than 140 billion euros from Russia since 2022. US President Donald Trump made this issue more aggressive. He threatened to impose tariffs of up to 500 percent on countries buying oil from Russia, such as India, China and Brazil.

Fear of Iran and 25 percent additional tariff

America has announced to impose 25 percent additional tariff on Iran’s trade partners. India has been an important trading partner of Iran. Be it oil import or strategic projects like Chabahar Port. In such a situation, it is feared that this new tariff may be applicable to India also.

venezuelan oil

The most interesting twist in this entire incident has come regarding Venezuelan oil. America is now ready to sell Venezuelan oil to India. This is the same Venezuela from which India had earlier stopped buying oil due to US sanctions.

A major decision of US President Donald Trump has created a stir in world politics as well as India’s economy. The ‘Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025’, brought to further tighten the sanctions related to Russia, has received Trump’s approval. Under this law, heavy tariffs of up to 500 percent can be imposed on those countries which are trading oil, gas or other important commodities with Russia. India is also included in such countries, hence this decision is expected to have a direct impact on India.

India has been purchasing large quantities of crude oil and other energy resources from Russia for the last few years. After the Ukraine war, when many western countries distanced themselves from Russia, India met its energy needs by buying cheap Russian oil. India also benefited economically from this. But now the new law of the Trump government has made this path difficult. If India continues to buy oil and other goods from Russia, the US can impose tariffs of up to 500 percent on products coming from India.

Which sectors will be most affected

IT and Tech Sector- India’s IT sector is largely dependent on America. A major part of the income of big IT companies comes from the American market. Due to increasing tariffs and trade tensions, American companies may reduce spending on Indian IT services. This will affect new recruitments and may also increase the risk of job cuts.

Also read – The first batch of Agniveers is about to complete four years, know what will happen to them and how will they get jobs?

Textile and Garment Industry- A large part of the clothes and readymade garments from India goes to America. If heavy taxes are imposed on these, Indian products will become expensive. Due to this, American buyers can turn to other countries. This will have a direct impact on the factories and lakhs of workers working there.

Pharma Sector- India is called the pharmacy of the world and America is the largest market for Indian medicines. Due to increase in tariff, Indian medicines will become expensive, which may reduce exports. This may affect the earnings and jobs of pharmaceutical companies.

Auto and auto parts- Auto parts and some vehicle parts are sent to America from India. If the tariff increases, their exports may reduce, which may create a job crisis in this sector as well.

India US Trade Deal: No official announcement has been made yet regarding the ongoing trade talks between India and America. Meanwhile, a big statement has come out from America. Which has started a new discussion on this issue. US Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick has claimed that the trade deal between the two countries could not move forward because Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not call the then US President Donald Trump.

In an interview with American investor Chamath Palihapitiya on the All-In podcast, Latnik said that this was completely Trump’s deal and all the preparations were complete. According to him, all that was left was for Prime Minister Modi to call President Trump, but he was not comfortable doing so. Latnik also told that after this, America signed agreements with Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam in the very next week and announced many deals.

There is a difference between Latnik’s claims and figures

There is a difference between these claims and figures of Latnik. He has said that the countries which completed tariff negotiations with America early, got the benefit of lower tariffs. But the order and rates of the agreements signed in July 2025 show a different picture.

That month, the US completed negotiations with the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea. For example, Vietnam was the first to end negotiations. Despite this, America has imposed the highest tariffs on its exports.

Trade deal between India and America

Trade deals have been negotiated between India and America at many levels. However, it has not yielded any positive results yet. Many high officials from India have also visited America for trade deals.

According to Latnik, India has adopted a tough stance towards America’s demands. Trump has said earlier also that the tariff deal between the two countries will be done easily. America has imposed 50 percent tariff on India. Talking about statistics, this number is highest compared to Asian countries.

There has been an atmosphere of tension between America and India for a long time. It is being said that relations between India and America may become more sour in the coming days. In fact, US Senator Lindsey Graham claimed that US President Donald Trump has given the green signal to a bill imposing sanctions on Russia, which will stop India, China and Brazil from buying Russian oil. According to the official website of the US Congress, the name of this bill is Sanctioning of Russia Act 2025. One of its many provisions is that countries that knowingly buy uranium and petroleum products from Russia can be imposed a 500% tariff in America. In such a situation, let us now tell you whether no one can stop Trump from imposing 500% tariff on India. And what is the law of America?

What is Sanctioning of Russia Act 2025?

The Sanctioning of Russia Act 2025 presented in the US Congress is a bill with very stringent provisions. According to US Senator Lindsey Graham, President Trump has given the green signal to this bill and voting on it can take place next week. This is a bipartisan proposal, which is expected to get the support of both Democrats and Republicans. According to the information released by the American side, under this law, the American President will have the right to increase the import duty on all goods and services coming from Russia to America by at least 500 percent. Not only this, this provision will also apply to those countries which knowingly trade Russia’s petroleum and uranium products.

Why can India come under target?

Since the start of the Ukraine war, India has been among the major countries buying Russian crude oil at concessional rates. America considers this as indirect support to Russia’s economy. For this reason, President Trump has already imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India, taking the total duty to 50 percent. Now, if the new law comes into force, America can get the right to impose tariffs up to 500 percent on goods and services coming from India.

Can anyone stop Trump?

The special thing about this bill is that very wide powers have been given to the President in it. If this bill is passed by the US Congress, it will not be easy to legally stop Trump from imposing tariffs. This decision will depend on the President’s assessment as to which country is benefiting Russia through Russian energy trade.

Also read- Haircut Punishment: In this country, getting hair cut was considered a punishment worse than death, know what was the reason for this.

India US Trade Deal: The much awaited trade deal between India and America may happen in the first six months of this year. This has been said by Ian Bremmer, head of Eurasia Group and world renowned risk analyst. He says that American tariff increase on India may not even be included in the list of major risks for India in 2026. According to Bremer, this issue will definitely be big in 2025, but its importance will reduce significantly in 2026.

In an exclusive interview given to NDTV, Ian Bremner was asked about the timeline of the India-US trade deal. On this he clearly said, ‘India-America trade deal will be done in the first half of this year.’

Talks have been going on for several months

Negotiations on India-US trade deal have been going on for the last several months, but in August 2025, relations between the two countries turned sour when America imposed 50 percent tariff on India. This tariff was imposed due to India continuing to buy oil from Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last spoke to US President Donald Trump on December 11. This conversation took place shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India. After this, after the visit of US Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer to India in December, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had said that talks regarding a trade deal with America are in the advanced stage.

Donald Trump gave a statement

Earlier today, President Donald Trump also said that his relations with Prime Minister Modi are good, but there is disagreement regarding tariffs. Trump said, ‘I have a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, but he is not happy with me because India has to pay higher tariffs. However, now India has reduced oil purchases from Russia to a great extent.

Constant changes in the situation regarding trade deals and the absence of any fixed deadline have increased the pressure on Indian exporters, especially before the new financial year. Many domestic export sectors of India have been badly affected by the 50 percent tariff imposed by America. These include leather, chemicals, footwear, gems and jewellery, textile and shrimp industries. These areas are expected to get relief in the coming days.

India-US Relations: US President Donald Trump has once again talked about his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump said that relations between the two are good, but PM Modi is not happy with the heavy tariffs imposed on India for the purchase of Russian oil.

Referring to his conversation with PM Modi during the House GOP member retreat, Trump said that relations between America and India are still friendly, but the tariff issue is creating tension. He also talked about the discussions he had with PM Modi regarding defense deals and tariffs.

Trump said this

Trump said, ‘I have a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, but he is not happy with me because India has to pay higher tariffs. However, now they have reduced oil purchases from Russia to a great extent. America has imposed a total of 50 percent tariffs on India, out of which 25 percent tariffs have been imposed for purchasing oil from Russia. America believes that by buying oil from Russia, India is indirectly strengthening Russia’s economy, while the Russia-Ukraine war continues. This statement of Trump has come at a time when a day earlier he had warned that if India does not address American concerns regarding oil imports from Russia, then tariffs on Indian goods can be further increased.

‘Modi knew I was not happy’

Trump said, ‘Modi knew that I was not happy. He wanted to make me happy. Modi is a very good person. In his speech, Trump also defended the tariff policy and said that America is benefiting economically from it. He also said that America is using tariffs to protect its interests.

In recent times, Trump has been continuously putting pressure on India to buy oil from Russia. They allege that India is giving financial help to Russia by buying cheap Russian oil. For this reason, higher duty has been imposed on Indian products.

India had rejected Trump’s claim

However, India has already rejected Trump’s claim that PM Modi has assured to stop purchasing oil from Russia. India has made it clear that no such talks or promises have taken place. Meanwhile, Trump is also presenting himself as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war. He has talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, although no concrete results have been announced yet.

This year has not been good for India and America from business and diplomatic point of view. There was tension in the relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, well-known US MP Raja Krishnamurthy held President Donald Trump’s policies responsible for weakening the relations between the two countries and the economic and security cooperation between the two old partners.

Indian-origin American MP Raja Krishnamurthy said, “US-India relations are not good right now for many reasons. Trade is a major reason for this dispute. The decline in relations has come at a time when there is a need to be more careful. Especially in South Asia, there is a greater need for coordination between the two countries.” “We need to come closer to each other now to ensure that the neighborhoods in that area remain safe,” he said. Along with this, it has been warned that armed groups can take advantage of the poor coordination between India and America.

At the same time, blaming the US President for this tension, Raja Krishnamurthy said, “Donald Trump came to office and everything changed in US-India relations. There has been a decline in both economic and security cooperation.”

It is very bad to mix with Pakistan’s army chief – Krishnamurthy

Recently, the closeness between Pakistan and America has been seen increasing. Regarding this, the American Congressman said, “Trump’s association with the military chief of Pakistan, and even removing the government of Pakistan, is very bad. The President left out the people of the Pakistani government and invited him (Asim Munir) for lunch at the White House.”

He said, “This shows how poorly our foreign policy is being made right now. When you alienate your friends, partners and allies like India and bring closer your enemies or strategic rivals like China or Russia, you show weakness and when you show weakness, you invite anger. When you are angry, you encourage fighting and perhaps war.”

Krishnamurthy said on Trump’s imposition of tariffs on India

Regarding the reduction in tension between the two countries, he simply said that as long as Trump continues to impose arbitrary tariffs on India and harass the Indian people, he is making a huge strategic mistake. “He is hurting America, hurting our economy and hurting our ability to lead in the world.”

US President Donald Trump has said that India should not “dump” (sell at cheap prices) rice in the US market and he will “deal with” the issue. Trump warned that this ‘problem’ would be easily solved by imposing tariffs. On Monday (December 8, 2025), Trump held a roundtable meeting with representatives of the farming and agriculture sector and key members of his cabinet, especially Finance Minister Scott Besant and Agriculture Minister Brook Rollins, at the ‘White House’, the official residence and office of the US President. He announced $12 billion in federal aid for farmers.

Merrill Kennedy, who runs her family’s agricultural business ‘Kennedy Rice Mill’ in Louisiana, told Trump that rice producers in the southern part of the country are ‘really struggling’ and that other countries are ‘dumping’ rice into the US market, that is, selling rice at very cheap prices.

When Trump asked which countries were selling rice to America at cheaper prices, Kennedy, sitting next to the President, replied, ‘India and Thailand; Even China is selling rice to Puerto Rico at cheap prices. Puerto Rico was once the largest market for American rice. We have not sent rice to Puerto Rico for many years. Kennedy said the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are working, “but we need to increase them further.”

Why is India allowed to do this? Why did Trump ask this?

Trump then looked at Besant and said, ‘India, tell me about India. Why is India allowed to do this? They will have to pay fees. Do they have discount on rice? To this Besant said, ‘No sir, we are currently negotiating a trade deal with them.’ Kennedy also told Trump that a case was going on against India in the World Trade Organization (WTO). Trump said it could be ‘dealt with very easily.’ He said, ‘This will be solved very quickly by imposing tariffs on those countries which are sending goods illegally. Your problem will be solved in a day, so we have to win the case in the Supreme Court.

India is the world’s largest rice producing country

According to data from the ‘Indian Rice Exports Federation’, India is the world’s largest rice producing country and holds 28 percent share in the global market.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (11 November 2025) that his administration is very close to finalizing a Fair Trade Deal with India. He indicated that the high import tariffs imposed on India can be reduced in the coming times.

In response to questions from journalists, Trump said, “Tariffs on India are very high because of Russian oil, but now India has significantly reduced the purchase of oil from Russia.” We will reduce the tariff at the earliest appropriate time. His statement has come at a time when America had recently increased the duty on some products coming from India from 25% to 50%. The reason for this was said to be India’s ongoing oil import from Russia, whereas India has always been saying that it takes decisions based on its energy security interests.

So right now, they don’t love me, but they’ll love us again. We’re getting a fair deal, just a fair trade deal. We had pretty unfair trade deals…But we’re… pic.twitter.com/r93gmaU7xk

Trump’s comment on oil trade between India and Russia
Trump claimed that India has now significantly reduced the purchase of oil from Russia. However, the Government of India had already made it clear that its policy is based on energy procurement in line with national interests. Earlier, Trump had also said that he had received assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop oil trade with Russia, but India had not confirmed any such conversation.

New chapter towards fair trade
Trump said in his statement that in the past decades, trade agreements between America and India have always been one-sided, due to which American companies suffered losses. “Now his administration is preparing an agreement that will equally balance the interests of both countries.” He said, “We are making a new agreement with India which will be completely different from before. This will prove beneficial for both the countries.”
