The importance of this yes of Trump increases further because earlier US Finance Minister Scott Besant had asked Russia to impose more tariffs on the countries buying oil. Besant argues that it is impossible to bring Putin to the conversation table without financially destroying Russia.

India may get the biggest shock of this policy, because India is importing a large amount of crude oil from Russia. This step is important for Indian energy security, but the US believes that Russia is getting financial benefit due to buying oil, which it is using in war against Ukraine.

American tariff threat on India
The US Finance Minister did not directly name India, but the statement given by him was clear. He said that if the US and the European Union together put more tariffs on Russian oil buying countries, then Russia’s economy will collapse. India is already facing 25% additional tariffs due to buying oil from Russia, due to which the total tariff has reached 50%. Top officials in Washington have indicated that India can be put further pressure in the coming time. However, on this matter, India says that its oil import is completely in the national interest and it will not change its policy by being influenced by the politics of a third country.

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s tariff policy applied to India. He said that heavy tariffs imposed on India are a big mistake in bilateral relations. The US has imposed a total of 50 percent tariff on India, out of which 25 per cent has been implemented on August 7, the second 25 per cent has been imposed on purchasing oil from Russia, which will be applicable from August 27. At the same time, Bolton said that China is also buying Russian oil, but such tariffs or secondary restrictions were not imposed on Beijing.

US Commerce Minister Hovald Lutenik said in a conversation with CNBC that new rates could be implemented in late July or from August 1. Trump warned that Washington will soon announce tariffs on pharmaceuticals, giving time to drug manufacturers, so that they start their operations by bringing them to the US.

What is the effect on India

If we talk about the impact of American tariffs on India, then during the financial year 2024-25, India has exported 2 billion dollars of copper and copper products worldwide. In the US, it has sent 17 percent of the total exports $ 360 million to the US.

According to commercial data, India exports 26 percent of the total copper in Saudi Arabia and then 18 percent copper in China, while the third is the US, where 17 percent of the total export is exported. Copper is used from energy and manufacturing to infrastructure. In such a situation, if the demand for copper in America is reduced due to the new tariff, then it will directly affect America’s domestic industries.

Whereas, India’s pharmaceutical sector will suffer the most injuries from American tariffs. America is a large market for Pharma, where the financial year 2024-25 was supplied to $ 9.8 billion. This is 21 percent i.e. $ 9.1 billion more than a year ago. That is, about 40 percent of India’s total pharma was exported to America last year. In such a situation, due to 200 percent tariff on the pharma sector by the US, the drugs being supplied in the US can have a big impact, which is getting cheap there.
