Afghanistan Weapons Sources: Tension in the region has once again increased after the alleged air attack by Pakistan in Kabul, Afghanistan. This has given rise to serious concerns regarding security and stability. An important question has come to light after this incident. Where does Afghanistan get its weapons from and can this military capability of Afghanistan become a challenge for Pakistan? Let us know what is the answer to this question.

US and NATO equipment

The largest part of Afghanistan’s current military strength comes from weapons that US and NATO forces left behind after their withdrawal in 2021. When the Taliban took power, they captured military equipment worth approximately $7.1 billion. These included m4 and m16 rifles, armored vehicles like Humbi, night vision devices and thermal optics, helicopters and aircraft.

Soviet era weapons still in use

Afghanistan also has a large stockpile of old weapons from the Soviet Union era. These include AK-47 rifles, tanks and artillery systems. These weapons have been a part of Afghanistan’s military landscape since the 1980s.

Arms through regional and informal means

According to reports, weapons made in countries like China, Türkiye and even Pakistan itself have been found in the possession of Taliban. However, these are not supplied officially. It is believed that most of these weapons have reached Afghanistan through black market networks, smuggling routes and weapons left over from previous conflicts.

Why could this prove costly for Pakistan?

It is being said that the current military capability of Afghanistan can pose serious challenges to Pakistan. The main reason for this is the presence of modern equipment from America. Equipment like night vision and thermal devices can provide a significant advantage in night time operations.

In the last few months, border clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan have intensified. According to reports, both sides have suffered huge loss of life and property in these border clashes. Taliban in Pakistan have also been accused of supporting Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

The strength of Taliban lies not only in its weapons but also in its experience. Due to decades of experience in fighting guerrilla warfare, its fighters are quite adept at fighting in rugged and mountainous areas.
