Amidst the continuous attacks on places of worship of minorities in America, a new proposal has been put forward in the Congress there. Its purpose is to protect Hindu temples and other places of worship from harassment. Lawmakers say that threats to people of different religions are increasing. The name of this proposal is ‘Safeguarding Access to Congregations and Religious Establishments from Disruption’ (SACRED Act). Under this, intimidating, blocking or harassing people within 100 feet of any place of worship will be considered a federal crime.

This proposal was presented by Tom Suozzi and Max Miller supported him in this. “No one should deserve to be harassed or intimidated, especially when they are walking to their place of worship,” Suozzi said. At the same time, Miller said, ‘Every American has the right to practice his religion without any fear, intimidation or harassment. This proposal has come at a time when there is increasing concern about incidents of attacks and intimidation around religious places.

Supporters say that Hindu temples, Jewish prayer places, mosques and churches – all are facing such incidents. ‘Hindu American Foundation’ said that there has been a worrying increase in incidents of targeting and desecration of Hindu temples across America, which has created a sense of insecurity among devotees. Under this law, if someone is found guilty for the first time, he can be fined or jailed for up to one year. If the same person does it again, the punishment can be more severe, including up to three years in jail.

This bill also gives the victims the right to file civil cases. Apart from this, officials including the Attorney General of America can take steps to stop such cases and provide compensation. This bill has received the support of many organizations, including the ‘Anti-Defamation League’, ‘American Jewish Committee’ and ‘Islamic Society of North America’. According to the Anti-Defamation League, incidents of hatred against Jews are on the rise.

In the year 2024, 9,354 such incidents were recorded, of which 1,702 incidents took place in Jewish institutions. A report by the American Jewish Committee states that 55 percent of Jews have changed their daily routine due to fear. Supporters say there is currently no specific federal law that protects people from harassment outside places of worship. However, it has also been made clear in this bill that the right to peaceful protest will remain, which is protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.
