Usha Uthup was born on 8 November 1947 in a Tamil family in Mumbai. His father, Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami, worked in the police department, due to which his family was very disciplined. He had a passion for music since childhood.

It was his habit to listen to songs of artists like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan on the radio at home. His interest in music was so deep that at the age of only nine he performed his first stage show.
