Once King Dasharatha said to Maharishi Vashishtha – O Gurudev! Please tell the importance of Vaishakh Shukla Chaturthi fast. Vashishtha ji said – There was a beautiful city named Bhadrak in Gujarat. A pious and charitable king named Raja Brahmapriya ruled there.

He was very knowledgeable, performed yajnas and respected Brahmins and guests. But there was a big problem in his life – his wives started dying one by one. His five wives died, which left him very sad. Saddened, the king left the kingdom and reached the ashram of his guru Shwetaketu in the forest.

The king narrated his entire sad story. Then Shwetaketu ji went into meditation and said, O king! All this happened because Chaturthi fast was not being observed in your state. Those who do not observe this fast, their auspicious deeds also do not bear fruit. The king realized his mistake and asked “O Gurudev! How is this fast observed and who is worshipped?

This fast is of Lord Ganesha, who is the remover of all obstacles. He further narrated his story that his father Uddalak had taught him that one should worship Lord Ganesha by calming the mind. By the grace of Lord Ganesha, the mind becomes calm and a person can attain moksha (liberation).

Shwetaketu ji gave the mantra of Ganesh ji to the king. King Brahmapriya came back to his kingdom and made announcement in the entire kingdom. Fast should be observed every month on Chaturthi of Shukla and Krishna Paksha. He himself kept a fast with devotion and worshiped Lord Ganesha.

As a result his life became happy and he ruled well. At last he became absorbed in God (moksha). Second story (of the sinful Brahmin) Vashishtha ji gave another example – There lived a very sinful Brahmin in Maharashtra. He used to drink alcohol, steal and do bad things.

One day he was caught doing something wrong with a woman and that woman’s husband injured him. That day was Chaturthi Tithi, and due to injury the Brahmin remained hungry the whole day. He died the next day. But the surprising thing was that due to unknowingly observing the fast on Chaturthi, he also got salvation.

The person who listens or recites the greatness of Vaishakh Shukla Chaturthi, all his wishes will be fulfilled. In this way the greatness of Vaishakh Shukla Chaturthi described in Shrimudgalpuran is complete.
