So far 16 elections have been held for the post of Vice President of India and only four times the candidates could win unopposed, while two elections were seen to be a multicultural contest. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the Vice President twice from 1952 to 1962 and he won unopposed in the elections both times.

At the same time, in the 1952 election, Nomination was filed by Janab Sheikh Khadir Hussain of Andhra Pradesh, but his nomination papers were rejected, which led to Radhakrishnan the only candidate. In 1979, famous jurist and former Chief Justice of India Mohammad Hidayatullah was elected unopposed Vice President. Hidayatullah has the distinction of working as Chief Justice, Vice President and Acting President.

Hidayatullah became acting President for a month

As the Chief Justice, Hidayatullah worked as a acting President for a month in 1969, when V.V. Giri resigned from the post of acting President and Vice President to contest the presidential election.

After the death of the then President Zakir Hussain on 3 May 1969, Giri took over as the acting President. In 1987, the then Governor of Maharashtra Shankar Dayal Sharma won the Vice President unopposed. 27 people had filed nomination papers for the ninth Vice Presidential election, but the Election Officer found only Sharma’s application valid.

This year, there was a triangular contest in the Vice Presidential election

After that in 1992, in the next Vice Presidential election, K.R. Narayanan got 700 votes out of 701 votes. His opponent Kaka Joginder Singh, also known as ‘Earth Pakan’, got only one vote. A total of 711 votes were cast in the election, out of which 10 were found illegal.

The triangular contest was seen in the Vice Presidential election only in 2007, when UPA candidate M. Hamid Ansari was contesting with NDA candidate Najma Heptullah and third front candidate Rashid Masood. Out of a total of 790 voters in that election, 762 voted, out of which 10 were found illegal. Out of the valid 752 votes, Ansari got 455 votes, Heptulla got 222 and Masood got 75 votes.

VV Giri resigned to contest the presidential election

In 1962, Zakir Hussain won the Vice President against NC Samant Singh by 554 votes. Out of the 745 -member electorate, 596 members cast their votes, out of which 14 were found illegal. In 1967, VV Giri defeated Professor Habib and won the Vice Presidential election.

In 1969, GS Pathak defeated five candidates and became Vice President. That year, elections were held for Giri’s resignation from the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election that year. In 1974, B.K. D. Jatty N. The Vice President won the election by defeating E. Horo. Jatty got 521, while Horo got 141 votes.

BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat also took office

In the year 1984, R.K. Venkataraman won the Vice Presidential election. He got 508 votes out of 715 valid votes. He defeated Bapu Chandrasen Kamble. In 1987, Venkataraman left the post to contest the presidential election and Shankar Dayal Sharma was elected Vice President in that year. In 1997, Krishnakant defeated Surjeet Singh in the Vice Presidential election. Kant got 441 votes, while Singh got 273 votes.

BJP leader Bhairon Singh Shekhawat defeated Congress candidate Sushil Kumar Shinde in the 2002 Vice Presidential election. Shekhawat got 454 votes out of 759 valid votes, while Shinde got 305 votes. In 2007, M Hamid Ansari won the Vice Presidential election and in 2012 the then UPA government fielded him again.

Jagdeep Dhankhar became Vice President after defeating Congress candidate

In 2012, Ansari defeated BJP candidate Jaswant Singh by 490 votes. In 2017, BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu defeated Gopalakrishna Gandhi of Congress -led UPA. Naidu got 516 votes out of 760 valid votes, while Gandhi got 244 votes. In the year 2022, BJP -led NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar defeated Congress -led UPA candidate Margaret Alva. Dhankhar got 528 votes, while Alva got 182 votes.

On Sunday (July 20, 2025) on the eve of the monsoon session of Parliament, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar called for a cordial atmosphere among political parties for meaningful and serious discussion and appealed to MPs to avoid using unfair words.

Addressing a group of Rajya Sabha intern in New Delhi, Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar referred to being sharp in television discussions and said, “We have come out of such things.”

Expressing surprise, he said, “We may have differences, disagreements, but how can there be bitterness in our hearts?” I appeal to all the people in the field of politics, please respect each other. Please do not use abusive language on television or against the leadership of any party. This is not the essence of our civilization. ”

Political parties join creative politics- Vice President

Underlining the need for meaningful discussion in the monsoon session starting on Monday (July 21, 2025), Dhankhar said, “If we believe in our view and believe that I am right, others are always wrong – this is not democracy.” This is not our culture. This is ego. We should control our ego. We should try to know why the attitude of another person is different, this is our culture. We have to trust our attitude. But we also have to respect the other’s attitude. So I appeal to political parties to join creative politics. “

I believe that the upcoming session will be important- Vice President

He said, “India is historically known for discussion, dialogue, debate and discussion. Nowadays all this is not visible in Parliament. I assume that the coming session will be important. I am hopeful that meaningful discussion, serious discussions will be done, which will take India to new heights. There is scope. “

He said, “If there is any suggestion to improve something, it is not a condemnation. It is not a criticism. He is only a suggestion for further development. So I appeal to political parties to join creative politics. I appeal to all parties, parties, ruling parties and parties on the other. We should be flexible.

Stop abusing politicians- Vice President

The Vice President said, “I appeal to politicians to avoid personal attacks. Now the time has come to stop abusing politicians. When people in various political parties abuse senior leaders of other political parties, it does not benefit our culture. We should have full sense of dignity and mutual respect and this is not the demand of our culture.

Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosbale of the Sangh started the debate about adding the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialism’ in the preamble of the Constitution, now the Vice President of the country Jagdeep Dhankhar has extended it further. During an event at the Vice President’s building, the Vice President said that the words added to the emergency during the Emergency are canker; A sacred insult performed with Sanatan’s soul.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “The preamble of any constitution is its soul. The preface of the Indian Constitution is unique. The preamble of the Constitution of any country of the world except India has not changed, and why? The Preamble is irreversible. The Preamble is unchanging on which the entire constitution is the basis. Words like ‘socialist’, ‘secular’ and ‘integrity’ were added.

‘Emergency is the dark period of Indian democracy’

The Vice President said this during a program organized at the Vice President’s residence. Dhankhar said, “Emergency was the most dark period of Indian democracy when people were in jails, fundamental rights were suspended. In the name of those people who were in slavery at that time, was the words only performed? It should be condemned by going beyond words. Kesavanand Bharati vs. Kerala State, 1973 in the historic decision of 1973, the back of the 13 -judges, the back of 13 judges, the back of the Posman Kaya.

What did the Vice President say about Dr. Ambedkar?

The Vice President said that “We should be self -conscious, Dr. Ambedkar did this work with great diligence. He must have considered it deeply. Our constitution makers had added the preamble as correct and appropriate. But this soul was changed at a time when people were in bondage. People of India, who were the source of the highest power, were deprived of reaching the jails. Talking about how big it is a ridicule of justice that is ‘unchanged’ which is ‘people of India’ and then change it during the Emergency when we were in the heart of India.

‘Unholy disrespect of Sanatan’s soul’

Referring to the Constitution Amendment, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said, “We are changing the soul of the Constitution. In fact, it was a shock of words that was done in the dark period that was the most difficult time for the Indian Constitution. If you think deeply, it is a change that gives rise to existence crisis. The addition of these words is a deception of the mentality of the constitution.

First Dattatreya Hosbale and now the country’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has started politics in the country with the way his statements have physically expressed about the words added in the preamble of the Constitution. For the last few years, the opposition has been continuously attacked by the government that the government is preparing to change the constitution, in such a situation, after such statements have come to light, the opposition is once again aggressive about it and politics in the name of the constitution in the country is hot again.

Dhankhar said that he too is suffering from protocol in a way. He said, “You must have seen the picture of the President and the Prime Minister, but not the Vice President. At the end of my tenure, I will make sure that my successor is definitely a picture.

‘It is not a matter of position’

Addressing an event in Delhi on Monday, Dhankhar said that this morning he remembered something very important in the country, and it is not about me … We should believe in protocol. “Dhankar said in a book release program,” The Chief Justice and Protocol of the country are given great importance. When he indicated this, it was not personal, it was for his post and I am sure that everyone should keep in mind.

The Vice President insisted, “But I am really grateful to the existing CJI to attract the attention of bureaucrats. It is necessary to follow the protocol. ”

What is the matter?

Justice Gawai, who took oath as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was in Mumbai to attend the honor ceremony organized by Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council. A few hours after his comment, when Chief Justice Gawai went to Chaityabhumi, the Mahaparinirvana site of BR Ambedkar in Dadar to pay tribute to the social reformer and the constitution maker, these three top officials were present at that time.

Jagdeep Dhankhar News: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar is coming to meet his secretary’s father at 4.30 am today. The Vice President will fulfill his promise from 84-year-old professor Suresh Chandra Gupta, resident of Balda Colony of Nishatganj, Lucknow, today.

All the family members along with Shyam Janaki, wife of Professor Suresh Chandra Gupta, are very happy on his arrival. The house of Professor Saheb in Balda Colony of the municipality, built in 1960, will climb 24 stairs and meet Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar with his secretary’s family members.

Vice President and Professor Suresh Chandra Gupta meet
Professor Suresh Chandra Gupta is retired from KGMU from Mental Medical Department. This is not the first meeting of Suresh Chandra and Vice President. Actually his elder son Sunil Kumar Gupta is a 1985 batch Bengal cadre IAS officer. Sunil Kumar Gupta and Vice President Dhankhar came in contact with each other when he was the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. After this, Sunil Kumar Gupta was posted at Raj Bhavan in West Bengal.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was very impressed after seeing Sunil Kumar Gupta’s honesty and dedication to work. After this, he took him with him and went to Delhi and made his secretary. During this, Sunil Gupta’s father Professor Suresh Gupta became ill, whose treatment went on in New Delhi.

Vice President fulfills the promise to meet professor
During treatment in Delhi, Vice President came to the hospital several times to meet Professor Suresh Gupta. But the conversation was reduced due to being ill. Then the Vice President had said that if you ever come to Lucknow, you will definitely meet home. In such a situation, this auspicious opportunity has come today. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has come to Lucknow on the occasion of the book release of Governor Anandi Ben Patel. In such a situation, today the President is coming to his residence around 4 pm to meet his secretary’s father.

The municipal teams were engaged in the task of dazzling drains and abuses regarding the arrival of the Vice President. Seeing the rehearsal of the Vice President coming out of Professor Suresh Gupta’s house, everyone had guessed that a particular person is coming.

Shyam Janaki, wife of Suresh Chandra, was very happy about the arrival of the Vice President. He told that when the President was told that Professor Suresh Chandra’s house will have to go to the narrow C41 stairs to go to the house, so it would be better if this meeting be done in the daughter’s room below. On this, the Vice President said that he is going to meet his father, not his daughter. I will go to meet the stairs only.
