The Vigilance Department in Baliguda of Kandhamal district of Odisha on Saturday (June 6, 2026) carried out a major raid on 9 locations linked to Baikunth Nath Behera, an Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA). Actually, there were allegations against Baikunth Nath Behera of having disproportionate assets, under which the Vigilance Department raided all the locations of Behera simultaneously.

During the raid, Odisha Vigilance Department has so far detected property worth crores of rupees near Baikunth Nath Behera, which includes a five-storey building and 13 expensive plots. Apart from this, cash worth Rs 2 crore and more than 300 grams of gold has also been recovered from two lockers.

When the department officials saw bundles of notes inside the locker of accused Baikunth Nath Behera, they were surprised. The officials called for the bank’s cash counting machines to count the cash found in the locker. According to sources, both the lockers were registered in the name of engineer Behera’s wife.

How many properties have been discovered so far in the raid??

The properties found so far in the raids by the Odisha Vigilance Department include five buildings, four luxurious buildings in Bhubaneswar, including a 10,500 sq ft four-storey building in Neeladri Vihar, a 1,100 sq ft three-storey building in Shailashree Vihar, a 3,750 sq ft two-storey building in Kanan Vihar and a 2,500 sq ft two-storey building in Chandrashekharpur and one in Dharamshala, Jajpur. The ancestral land also includes a 2,500 square feet two-storey building.

Along with this, the 13 expensive plots include 7 plots in prime areas of Bhubaneswar like Chandrashekharpur, Shailshree Vihar, Ghatikia and Bomikhal, 5 plots in Dharamshala area of ​​Jajpur district and one plot in Baripada.

Baikunth Nath Behera joined government service in 1999

It is noteworthy that accused Baikunth Nath Behera, 52, had joined government service as a junior engineer in the year 1999 and his initial salary was Rs 6,000. He was promoted to the post of Assistant Engineer in 2016 and AEE in February 2026, when he was posted in ITDA, Baliguda.

If the raid was lying, the bundles of crores of notes were thrown from the window

In this incident, there was a surprising turn when the officials of the Vigilance Department reached the house of Baikunth Nath Sarangi to raid. Fearing the raids, Chief Engineer Baikunth Nath Sarangi threw the bundles of crores of notes out of his flat window. However, the bundles of those notes were later recovered by the officials of the Vigilance Department in the presence of witnesses.

Officials of the Vigilance Department recovered cash worth 1.1 crore from the fingers of Sarangi and 1 crore from Bhubaneswar flat in the raid. The department took this action on charges of possessing disproportionate assets from known sources. A total of 26 police officers were deployed during this action, including 8 DSPs, 12 inspectors and 6 ASIs along with other assistant employees.
