A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking registration of an FIR against actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in a case of alleged income tax irregularities. This matter is said to be related to the film Puli released in 2015. The High Court registry has numbered the petition on Wednesday (6 May 2026) and it may soon be listed for hearing on the issue of maintainability.

What is the whole matter?

Although this petition was first filed last month, the registry had initially refused to give it a number. After this, on April 8, Chief Justice Sushruta Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. The division bench of Arul Murugan had directed the registry to number the petition under maintainability. It has been said in the petition that after the release of the film Puli, the Income Tax Department had conducted search and seizure action on the premises associated with Vijay on September 30, 2015. During this time, such documents were allegedly found which indicated unaccounted cash transactions.

TVK Chief was also interrogated before

According to the documents, the film’s producer P.T. Selvakumar and Shibu (SKT Studios) had given Vijay Rs 16 crore through check and about Rs 4.93 crore in cash. The petition claimed that TDS was deposited only on the amount paid through cheque, and not on cash payment. The petition also said that Vijay was interrogated during the Income Tax investigation, in which he allegedly admitted to receiving around Rs 5 crore in cash and agreed to pay tax on it.

Had himself disclosed disproportionate assets

Additionally, he had voluntarily disclosed additional income of Rs 15 crore for the financial year 2015-16. Later, on July 29, 2016, Vijay filed an income tax return declaring a total income of Rs 35.42 crore for assessment year 2016-17, which included this additional income. Depreciation of Rs 17.81 lakh and exemption on fans club expenses of Rs 64.71 lakh were also claimed in the return. The petition has now demanded criminal action and registration of FIR against Vijay on the basis of facts revealed in the income tax proceedings.
