Indian freestyle wrestler Vinesh Phogat has got permission to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games to be held on 30 and 31 May. The Supreme Court has upheld the order of Delhi High Court and issued notice on the petition of Wrestling Federation (WFI). Now further hearing will be held on June 1. However, the court has also raised many questions on Vinesh Phogat’s demand. The court said that Vinesh Phogat is not an ordinary athlete, she has achieved many achievements, but the country comes first.

While allowing Vinesh Phogat to attend the trial, the Supreme Court said, ‘Since the trial is tomorrow, we do not want to stop you. However, we have many questions regarding the High Court order. You will have to answer them.

Delhi High Court had given permission to Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials of Asian Games 2026, but Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) challenged this decision in the Supreme Court. While hearing the petition of WFI on Friday (May 29, 2026), the Supreme Court told Vinesh Phogat, ‘You are not an ordinary athlete, but we have some questions.’

Vinesh Phogat’s lawyer requested the Supreme Court and said, ‘I am only demanding to participate in the trial. A woman who became a mother a year ago is only asking the court to allow her to participate in the trial. On this appeal, the Supreme Court told her that on December 14, 2024, you took a break, then became a mother, you did not participate in the doping test. You did not even give information about where you are. The judge said that you later told that you were busy in the assembly proceedings, but your explanation was not accepted.

The Supreme Court further said that the process related to the Asian Games started in February 2026, for which you had to participate in four sports, which you did not do. You showed activism and filed a petition in May. The judge further said, ‘We have to keep in mind that Indian sports is connected to world sports. The High Court called the sports association’s rule exclusionary, it was strange. The rules have been around for a long time and are for everyone. You have achieved a lot in sports, but the country comes first.
