Adani Ports: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the second phase of development of Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, for which Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) is going to invest Rs 16000 crore to increase the capacity of the port to 5.7 million TEUs by 2029. On this occasion, Managing Director of Adani Ports Karan Adani and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal were also present.

Capacity of Vizhinjam Port will increase

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Karan Adani said, “With an additional investment of Rs 16,000 crore under Phase 2 and a total commitment of Rs 30,000 crore, Vizhinjam will expand from a capacity of 1 million TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) to 5.7 million TEUs by 2029, emerging as India’s largest transshipment port and a globally competitive maritime hub.”

Company MD Karan Adani further said, this is the biggest investment made by any business house in the state of Kerala.

Karan appreciated CM’s support

He said, “Vizhinjam became the fastest Indian port to handle 1 million TEU in just 15 months of operation – thereby firmly placing Kerala on the global shipping map and showcasing India’s port-based development vision.” Karan further adds, “I must admit that if it were not for the CM’s constant support, we would not have been able to complete this project. He has been the biggest asset any investor can hope for when implementing such a large green field project.”

He also acknowledged the continued support given to the project by opposition leader V.D. Satheesan and MP Shashi Tharoor, calling it a strong example of cooperative federalism. Sources had earlier told PTI that the Phase 2 equipment development will include 21 automated ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, 45 automated cantilever rail-mounted gantry (CMRG) cranes, a rail handling yard and a state-of-the-art electrical and automation system.

Adani Ports agreement with BPCL

Adani Ports has signed an MoU with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to commence India’s first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation at Vizhinjam Port. The port will serve as a dedicated LNG refueling hub for ships along the East-West Shipping Corridor.
