Before the assembly elections in West Bengal, about 7 lakh new voters have been added to the voter list. However, the Election Commission has not shared the age or any other information regarding the newly added voters. A senior Election Commission official said on Saturday (April 18, 2026) that out of these new voters, about 3.22 lakh voters will vote in the first phase, while the remaining about 3.88 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in the second phase.

The Election Commission did not clarify how many of these new voters are those who will vote for the first time and have just turned 18, nor did it give any other details regarding these voters. The Election Commission also did not tell how many Form-6 applications were received for inclusion in the voter list or how many of them were rejected.

According to news agency IANS, a senior Election Commission official said, “The total figures have been released as per the norms. Detailed data is ready and will be shared later if required. The Commission said that the total number of voters in the state is now 6,82,51,008, which may increase if names are added after the orders of the tribunal.

West Bengal Assembly Election Schedule

West Bengal Assembly elections are being conducted in two phases, which is a much smaller and faster program than before. The first phase of voting will be held on 23 April 2026 and voting will be held on a total of 152 assembly seats. The second phase of voting will be held on 29 April 2026, in which voting will be conducted on 142 seats. The counting of votes for the entire election will be done on 4th May 2026 and the entire election process will be over by 6th May 2026. This time, elections are being held on a total of 294 assembly seats in West Bengal and any party or alliance will need at least 148 seats to form the government. A special thing about this election is that it is being conducted in only two phases, whereas in 2021 the same election was held in eight phases.
