Why Office Workers Get Dehydrated In AC Rooms: At first glance, it seems that people working in hot sunlight would be the most victims of dehydration. But the real picture is different. Many times, people going to office sitting in AC all day end up getting more dehydrated by the end of the day, the only difference is that this problem increases slowly and silently. Let us tell you what experts say about this.

What do experts say?

Dr P Vikrant Reddy, a nephrologist at Care Hospitals, Hyderabad, told TOI that this is no longer a new thing for him. According to him, it seems that people working outside would be more dehydrated, but in practice, people sitting in offices often drink less water. The reason for this is not laziness, but our working style and environment.

What is the effect of air conditioner?

Sitting in an air conditioner weakens the body’s signals. Usually, thirst signals us to drink water, but when there is neither sweating nor heat, this signal gradually gets ignored. In such a situation, hours pass by and we do not even realize that the body is losing water. Dr. Reddy explains that cold air definitely gives comfort, but it also increases dryness. The body constantly loses water through the skin and breath, but it is not visible. This is the reason why people sitting in AC move towards dehydration without realizing it.

Tea and coffee are also harmful

The practice of drinking tea and coffee in the office also increases this problem. People drink several cups of tea or coffee throughout the day and assume that they have taken enough fluids. But the reality is that these drinks replace water, not increase it. According to Dr. Reddy, people think that they have been drinking something or the other throughout the day, but in reality their body is not as hydrated as it should be. This is the reason why one feels tired and heaviness by the end of the day.

What are its symptoms?

Symptoms of dehydration also seem to be very common such as light headache, lack of concentration or tiredness by evening. People mistake these for work pressure or lack of sleep, whereas many times the real reason is lack of water. This problem increases due to sitting for a long time. When we work sitting at one place for hours, we do not pay attention to body signals. Neither do we get a chance to get up, nor do we remember to drink water.

What could be the problem?

Doctors warn that if lack of water continues for a long time, it can increase the risk of kidney stones or urine infection. These effects are not visible immediately, but can gradually become serious. The good thing is that its solution is not very difficult. You just have to develop the habit of drinking little water throughout the day, reduce your dependence on tea and coffee and get up and take breaks in between.
