Test of TMC and BJP in the second phase

The results of Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly and East Bardhaman can play an important role in deciding the direction of the elections. Of the 142 seats to be voted in the second phase, Trinamool Congress had won 123 seats in 2021, BJP had won only 18 and ‘Indian Secular Front’ (ISF) had won one seat. Despite all the efforts of BJP, five years ago Mamata Banerjee’s party won a landslide victory in South Bengal and easily captured power.

BJP is trying to break into Mamata’s stronghold

Voting is also to be held in the second phase on Bhawanipur assembly seat, which is the political stronghold of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. BJP has fielded Leader of Opposition Subhendu Adhikari here. It is important for TMC to retain control over these areas, so that the way for it to come to power for the fourth consecutive time will remain wide open. There are 33 assembly seats in North 24 Parganas, 31 in South 24 Parganas, 16 in Howrah, 17 in Nadia, 18 in Hooghly, 16 in East Bardhaman and 11 in Kolkata.

Bumper voting took place during the first phase

After 93.19 percent voting was recorded in the first phase in the state, Mamata Banerjee had claimed that TMC has already crossed the 100 seat mark. This is the highest vote percentage so far in the state. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists has made the issue of deletion of names the most sensitive political issue of the second phase. More than 12.6 lakh names were removed from voter lists in North 24 Parganas, more than 10.91 lakh in South 24 Parganas, about 6.97 lakh in Kolkata, about six lakh in Howrah, 4.68 lakh in Hooghly and about 4.85 lakh in Nadia.
