Cold Wave Warning: Winter has taken hold in North India. Now the effect of cold is clearly visible in the morning and late evening. Cold wave warning has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department in many areas such as East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. But the question arises as to how severe the cold wave warning is issued by the Meteorological Department. Also, how is this thing decided? Let us know.

Absolute minimum temperature as the first indicator

The first parameter of IMD is based on the actual minimum temperature recorded at a place. Like for the plains the border is absolutely clear. The temperature here should fall to 10 degrees Celsius or below. Apart from this, if we talk about the hilly area then it becomes even more dangerous because here a cold wave is declared when the temperature falls to 0 degree Celsius or below. Not only this, due to the mild winter pattern in the coastal areas, cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature is 15 degrees Celsius or less.

second criterion

Every region has an established normal minimum temperature for each time of the year, based on decades of data. When the actual temperature drops sharply below this normal level, the Meteorological Department considers it as a possible cold wave. A fall of 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees Celsius is considered as a severe cold wave, while a fall of 6.4 degrees Celsius or more is considered as a severe cold wave.

Why are these two criteria needed?

Actually the climate of India is quite diverse. What is considered cold in Rajasthan is quite different from the cold in coastal Tamil Nadu. For this reason the Meteorological Department uses both criteria to avoid incorrect or misleading classification.

How does the Meteorological Department decide to issue a warning?

The Meteorological Department monitors temperatures through a network of local observatories, Doppler radar and real-time data systems. A cold wave warning is issued when one or more criteria are met for at least two consecutive days. These warnings are then published on the Meteorological Department platform and shared with the state authority for timely public advice.

Role of real time data in warning

IMD depends heavily on the latest updates received from automated weather stations. These record the continuously changing temperature. Any sharp or sudden decline is marked and checked against general climate data. This entire process helps meteorologists to detect early signs of cold wave conditions.

Also read: Can Pakistan fight a two-front war? If Pakistan, Afghanistan and India attack, how many days will it take for the situation to collapse?

Cyclone Montha, formed in the Bay of Bengal, is rapidly becoming stronger and according to the Meteorological Department, it can turn into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of 28 October. There is a possibility of it hitting the coast near Kakinada. An alert has been issued in Andhra Pradesh, while warnings of strong winds and heavy rain have also been issued in Odisha, Telangana and Chennai.

The weather system over the south-west and adjacent south-east Bay of Bengal moved north-westwards at a speed of 15 km per hour during the last six hours and lay centered over the south-west and adjacent west-central and south-east areas of the Bay of Bengal at 5.30 am on Monday (October 27, 2025). The Meteorological Department has said that ‘during the next 12 hours, it is likely to move north-westwards over the south-west and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal and after that it will move north-northwestwards and turn into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of 28 October.’

Forecast of rain with strong winds in these areas
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted light thunderstorms and moderate rainfall at some places in Anakapalle, Kakinada, Konaseema, Srikakulam, Nellore, Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and West Godavari districts in the next three hours with strong winds reaching up to 40 km per hour.

People advised to stay at home
Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) Managing Director Prakhar Jain advised people to stay indoors. He said that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore districts on Monday. Similarly, he said that there is a possibility of heavy rain in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitamaraju, Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle districts. Jain said similar weather is expected in East Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Guntur, Palanadu, Chittoor and Tirupati districts.

Heavy rain forecast in West Bengal also
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that there may be heavy rain in many districts of West Bengal from Tuesday to Friday. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri, while areas of South Bengal may receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Warning for fishermen and coastal areas
In view of the high waves and strong winds in the sea, fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea till Thursday. Also, the administration has kept rescue teams ready due to the possibility of waterlogging and landslides in low-lying areas.

The monsoon phase in India is not over yet. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the weather patterns may deteriorate in many parts of the country between 11 and 16 September. During this time, not only heavy rains but also thunderstorms and strong winds will also be at risk. Especially in Northeast, Eastern and Central India, its effect will be seen more.

In the coming days in different parts of the country, the Indian Meteorological Department has shared some information in terms of weather. According to the IMD, heavy rains are expected in the eastern parts in Madhya Pradesh on September 11. There is a possibility of continuous rain in Chhattisgarh from 11 to 14 September. Alert for heavy rainfall has been issued in Bihar on 11 to 14 September and 11 September in Jharkhand. Apart from Bihar’s capital Patna, Gopalganj, Kishanganj, Muzaffarpur, Siwan, East Champaran, Saran, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Vaishali and Bhagalpur have also been forecast today. Apart from this, there is a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Due to this, many districts of Bihar will be cloudy during the next 48 to 72 hours and intermittent rain can be seen. According to meteorological experts, the water level of local rivers in these states may increase and waterlogging in low -lying areas may arise.

The weather conditions from Odisha to Assam
According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rains are likely in Odisha on September 11 and 12 in many places and very heavy rains in some places. West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to have heavy rains in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 13 September. Talking about the northeastern state, light to moderate rain and heavy rain activities will continue in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from 11 to 16 September. Here the risk of problems like landslides and road barriers may increase.

Vigilance is necessary in North India
There is a possibility of rain in the states located in North India. There are chances of rain in Uttar Pradesh on 11, 12, 15 and 16 September in eastern parts and on September 12 in western parts. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain in many cities of UP on 11 and 12 September. On September 11, heavy rains have been warned in Gorakhpur, Santakbir Nagar, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich and Lakhimpur Kheri districts of eastern UP. At the same time, a warning of heavy rain has been issued here on 13 and 14 September in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There is the highest risk of cloudburst and landslides in the hilly areas, so passengers will need to take special care.

Status of west and South India
The situation in West and South India is also not correct in the weather. Talking about Maharashtra and Goa, there are chances of heavy rainfall in Konkan, Goa, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra between 12 and 16 September. In many districts of Maharashtra, the rainy season is going to be fast for the next three days. There is a possibility of heavy rainfall from Satara to Mumbai and Konkan region. During this time, people have been advised to be vigilant and take necessary precautions. At the same time, rivers are in spate due to continuous increase in water and water has entered the low-lying areas of rural areas, which has disturbed the lives of people.

NDRF and SDRF teams deployed

The administration has deployed teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for rescue and relief work.

Officials said that 46 children and four teachers of a school were trapped due to floods in Borasar village in Porbandar district, which were tried to evacuate safely. Meanwhile, one person died due to lightning in Manavadar village of Junagadh district.

Devbhoomi Dwarka in the grip of flood

Here, Rawal village of Devbhoomi Dwarka district has also been hit by floods due to heavy rains. From here, the connectivity route of Kalyanpur village has been completely affected. The administration has set up relief camps to deal with the situation and the work of transporting flood -surrounded families to safe places is going on.

Delhi weather news: The month of April this year in Delhi was the hottest and polluted in the last 3 years. According to reports from India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), both heat and pollution reached record level this time in the country’s capital. Experts believe that there is a huge reason for rainfall and western dry winds.

According to the IMD, the average maximum temperature of Delhi in this April was 39 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees above normal. This was the hottest month of April 2022, when the average maximum temperature was recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the minimum temperature was also 21.8 degrees on average, which is 0.5 degrees above normal.

How much it rained throughout the month?

Meteorological Department officials said that this time due to lack of Western disturbance and lack of rain, the heat in most parts of northwest India was higher than normal. Especially from 7 to 9 April, hot and dry winds in Delhi-NCR created situations like heat. There was only 0.7 mm of rainfall during the entire month, while the normal average is 16.3 mm. In April 2023, 19.4 mm in April and 7.5 mm in 2024 was recorded.

Mahesh Palawat, the meteorological expert and vice -president of Skymet, said that this time the dry and dusty weather not only proved to increase the temperature, but it also severely affected air pollution. He hoped that light rain may occur in early May, but after that the heat may show its effect again.

Talking about the level of pollution, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s average air quality index (AQI) was 211 in this April, which is the highest since 2022. This figure keeps air quality in a ‘poor’ category and can adversely affect health.

‘Yellow Alert’ released for 1 and 2 May
On Tuesday (April 29), the maximum temperature of the capital was 37.5 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature was 24.5 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of a similar weather today (30 April). At the same time, ‘Yellow Alert’ has been released in view of the possibility of strong winds and rain between Thursday to Saturday (May 1 to May 2).
