Cold Wave Warning: Winter has taken hold in North India. Now the effect of cold is clearly visible in the morning and late evening. Cold wave warning has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department in many areas such as East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. But the question arises as to how severe the cold wave warning is issued by the Meteorological Department. Also, how is this thing decided? Let us know.

Absolute minimum temperature as the first indicator

The first parameter of IMD is based on the actual minimum temperature recorded at a place. Like for the plains the border is absolutely clear. The temperature here should fall to 10 degrees Celsius or below. Apart from this, if we talk about the hilly area then it becomes even more dangerous because here a cold wave is declared when the temperature falls to 0 degree Celsius or below. Not only this, due to the mild winter pattern in the coastal areas, cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature is 15 degrees Celsius or less.

second criterion

Every region has an established normal minimum temperature for each time of the year, based on decades of data. When the actual temperature drops sharply below this normal level, the Meteorological Department considers it as a possible cold wave. A fall of 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees Celsius is considered as a severe cold wave, while a fall of 6.4 degrees Celsius or more is considered as a severe cold wave.

Why are these two criteria needed?

Actually the climate of India is quite diverse. What is considered cold in Rajasthan is quite different from the cold in coastal Tamil Nadu. For this reason the Meteorological Department uses both criteria to avoid incorrect or misleading classification.

How does the Meteorological Department decide to issue a warning?

The Meteorological Department monitors temperatures through a network of local observatories, Doppler radar and real-time data systems. A cold wave warning is issued when one or more criteria are met for at least two consecutive days. These warnings are then published on the Meteorological Department platform and shared with the state authority for timely public advice.

Role of real time data in warning

IMD depends heavily on the latest updates received from automated weather stations. These record the continuously changing temperature. Any sharp or sudden decline is marked and checked against general climate data. This entire process helps meteorologists to detect early signs of cold wave conditions.

Also read: Can Pakistan fight a two-front war? If Pakistan, Afghanistan and India attack, how many days will it take for the situation to collapse?

Delhi weather news: The month of April this year in Delhi was the hottest and polluted in the last 3 years. According to reports from India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), both heat and pollution reached record level this time in the country’s capital. Experts believe that there is a huge reason for rainfall and western dry winds.

According to the IMD, the average maximum temperature of Delhi in this April was 39 degrees Celsius, which is 2.5 degrees above normal. This was the hottest month of April 2022, when the average maximum temperature was recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the minimum temperature was also 21.8 degrees on average, which is 0.5 degrees above normal.

How much it rained throughout the month?

Meteorological Department officials said that this time due to lack of Western disturbance and lack of rain, the heat in most parts of northwest India was higher than normal. Especially from 7 to 9 April, hot and dry winds in Delhi-NCR created situations like heat. There was only 0.7 mm of rainfall during the entire month, while the normal average is 16.3 mm. In April 2023, 19.4 mm in April and 7.5 mm in 2024 was recorded.

Mahesh Palawat, the meteorological expert and vice -president of Skymet, said that this time the dry and dusty weather not only proved to increase the temperature, but it also severely affected air pollution. He hoped that light rain may occur in early May, but after that the heat may show its effect again.

Talking about the level of pollution, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s average air quality index (AQI) was 211 in this April, which is the highest since 2022. This figure keeps air quality in a ‘poor’ category and can adversely affect health.

‘Yellow Alert’ released for 1 and 2 May
On Tuesday (April 29), the maximum temperature of the capital was 37.5 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature was 24.5 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of a similar weather today (30 April). At the same time, ‘Yellow Alert’ has been released in view of the possibility of strong winds and rain between Thursday to Saturday (May 1 to May 2).
