This issue is no longer limited to just the environment, but is directly linked to India’s economy and growth. At the World Economic Forum, Davos, Harvard University professor and former IMF chief economist Geeta Gopinath gave a serious warning on this. He said that there is more focus on trade and global policies, while the economic impact of pollution is ignored. Air pollution reduces productivity, increases healthcare spending and puts pressure on overall economic activity. Poor air quality increases diseases and results in loss of working days. According to the World Bank, about 17 lakh deaths occur every year in India due to pollution, which is about 18% of the total deaths. According to Greenpeace Southeast Asia, India loses about ₹ 10.7 lakh crore annually due to air pollution, i.e. 5.4% of GDP.

David Rubenstein, co-founder of America’s largest private equity company Carlyle Group, has said that India is growing rapidly and can become the world’s largest economy in the next two-three decades. He said this in an interview at the World Economic Forum (WEF) going on in Davos.

Rubenstein said, ‘I think that India can become the largest economy in the world during our lifetime. I would say that maybe this can happen in 20-30 years.

What is the current situation in India?

India is currently the fourth largest economy in the world. It is the fastest growing economy in the world. India may soon leave Germany behind and reach the third position. Currently, America is the largest economy, followed by China at second place. With India’s rapid progress it will leave both America and China behind. He also pointed out the advantage of India’s young population, which will help a lot in the long run.

What advice did Rubenstein give to India?

He asked Indian policy makers not to treat global private credit and private equity (PE) as Western investments. Private equity means that companies invest money in such firms which are not yet listed in the stock market. Private credit means that companies give loans directly and not through banks. Rubenstein said, ‘If these markets are allowed to grow, then Indian entrepreneurs with good capital will come to India and many people will stay and work in India.’ This group has invested more than $ 8 billion in companies in various sectors of India.

What did you say on America-India relations?

Rubenstein said that there is no concern about the relations between America and India. He said, ‘President Trump has generally been very positive about America’s relations with India. He has sent one of his very close associates as ambassador.

Strong relationship between Trump and Jinping

Rubenstein said that the purpose of Trump’s China policy was not to harm China, but to correct the trade imbalance. China has increased its annual surplus to more than one trillion dollars by selling more in other markets. But for Trump, China is not as big an issue as the Russia-Ukraine issue. He said that Trump feels that he and Xi Jinping have a good relationship and they will meet at least twice this year. Maybe some agreement can also be reached.

US President Donald Trump has reached Switzerland on January 21, 2026. He has come to the World Economic Forum (WEF) to participate in the Davos conference. His journey was completed a little late because due to a problem with Air Force One, the plane had to return midway. From there he took another plane (Air Force C-32) and landed at Zurich Airport. There was a delay of about 2-3 hours from the original time.

What is Trump’s main focus in Davos?

Trump had earlier said that he would talk about the cost of living in America. But his demand to buy Greenland is the most discussed. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and 7 other NATO allies (UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland). That means, from February 1, 10% tariff will be applicable on all goods. If the Greenland deal is not reached, tariffs will increase by 25% from June 1.

Trump says that Greenland is important for America for security, resource and strategic reasons. He has said that ‘we must have Greenland’ and ‘there will be no turning back.’

What did European leaders say on Trump’s statement?

European Union Chief Ursula von der Leyen said that this is wrong and Europe will respond unitedly.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Trump a bully and talked about taking strict steps against the tariffs.

Denmark and Greenland flatly refused to make the deal and said that the people of Greenland would decide for themselves.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the main issue is Ukraine, not Greenland.

In Europe, Boeing is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on goods like whiskey and jeans.

What is Trump’s Board of Peace Plan?

Trump is promoting the Peace of Plan on the sidelines of Davos. This is a new group that will monitor the Israel-Hamas conflict and help in the reconstruction of Gaza. Trump has invited many countries, but European countries have not yet committed. Some reports say that this group may replace the United Nations (UN) in the future, but Trump said that the UN should continue.

On January 21, 2026, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has given a befitting reply to the statement of International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Kristalina Georgieva in Davos. The IMF chief had described India as a second-tier AI power, but Vaishnav rejected it outright and said that India is in the first group. This happened in a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos 2026, where the global impact of AI was being discussed.

What did the IMF Chief say against India?

Kristalina Georgieva had said in the panel that countries like America, Denmark and Singapore are in the top group in AI. He placed India in the second group, i.e. second-tier AI power. He praised India’s long-term investment in IT, but said that India is not yet ahead in AI.

What answer did Ashwini Vaishnav give to the IMF Chief?

Vaishnav, while directly addressing the IMF Chief, said, ‘I don’t know what the IMF’s criteria are, but Stanford University has ranked India third in the world in AI penetration, AI preparedness and AI talent. It ranks second in AI talent. Therefore your second-tier classification is not correct. India is clearly in the first group.

Vaishnav further said, ‘Return on Investment (ROI) does not come from making very big models. 95% of the work is done by models with 20-50 billion parameters. India has created many such models and is deploying them in various sectors, due to which productivity, efficiency and technology are being used better.

India is making progress on all five layers of AI

AI architecture has five layers: application layer, model layer, chip layer, infrastructure layer and energy layer. India is making good progress in all these five.

Ashwini Vaishnav said, ‘India will become the largest service provider to the world in the application layer. By understanding the business of the enterprise, it will provide service through AI application, this is where the highest ROI will come. India’s focus is on diffusing AI on a large scale, and not just on scale.

India is building a semiconductor ecosystem

According to Stanford report, India is in the top-3 in AI penetration, preparedness and talent. Is at number-2 in talent. India is building a semiconductor ecosystem, which includes design, fabrication, packaging, materials and equipment. Big players like Google are expanding AI data centers in India and forming deep partnerships with Indian startups. The world is considering India as a reliable partner in AI. India is focusing on the 5th Industrial Revolution, where small and low-cost solutions will yield higher returns.

During an important panel discussion held in Davos, Switzerland, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna gave a clear and unambiguous answer to the criticism regarding India’s technological capabilities. Sharing the stage with Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, he said that the perception that India is lagging behind in tech innovation, especially enterprise Artificial Intelligence (AI), is wrong.

While talking to a private TV channel, Arvind Krishna said that a major part of technology in India is not limited to creating completely new apps. He said that Indian companies work to improve existing systems, scale them and maintain them for the long term, which involves deep enterprise and AI innovation. According to him, saying that Indian tech talent is limited only to the application level is a superficial and wrong assessment.

How value shifts in the tech revolution

IBM CEO, while explaining the development of technology, said that the center of value changes in every technological revolution. Right from the beginning, there is investment in infrastructure like semiconductors, then operating systems and finally the most innovation is seen at the application level. He said that typically 90% of the value goes into application innovation in less than 10 years. If India adopts this change at the right time, there can be a big jump in both innovation and investment.

Not big AI models, small smart models are the strength of India

Speaking on Large Language Models (LLMs), Arvind Krishna said that trillion-parameter large AI models will become common and affordable in the future. The price and switching costs of such models will be very low, due to which they will not provide much strategic advantage to any country. Instead, he advised India to develop small, specialized and effective AI models that include the country’s sovereign data. He clearly said that such models can and should be made in India.

Excellent results from Sovereign AI

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav also supported this thinking. He told that recently Sovereign AI models were used in a big defense scenario, the results of which were very impressive. He said that creating a complete ecosystem of small and special models for different sectors is the right direction for economic and strategic benefits.

Different thinking regarding AGI

Arvind Krishna took a different perspective on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) from the prevailing thinking in Silicon Valley. He said that believing in AGI has become like an ideology or religion. Some people believe that with more data and bigger models we will get there, but they do not agree with this thinking. According to him, the real challenge is how to properly put knowledge into AI models and this remains the biggest shortcoming of science today.

Viable future for India

IBM CEO said that only efficient and sector-specific models like 50 billion parameters will prove to be most useful in the future. These are not only about 100 times cheaper than larger models, but also open new avenues of large-scale innovation and self-reliant AI development for countries like India.
