West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the state government wants the Tata group to return to Singur in Hooghly district. He called it not only an economic necessity, but also said that it would send a strong message that Bengal is ready for investment again.

The Bengal BJP chief said in an interview to PTI that the Tata Group’s return to Singur after the Nano project moved out of the state almost two decades ago sent a wrong message to investors and now there is a need to erase it. He said, ‘We want the Tata group to come back and that too in Singur.’

West Bengal, once the industrial center of India, has been continuously lagging behind in the last several decades. Referring to the controversy that arose after Tata’s withdrawal of the Nano project from Singur in 2008 and the anti-land acquisition movement led by Mamata Banerjee, Bhattacharya said that the removal of the Tata Motors plant had become a symbol of Bengal’s anti-industrial image. When asked whether Tata’s return to Singur could be considered ‘atonement’ for the mistakes of the previous government, he said the departure of Tata Motors has caused long-term damage to the investment climate of the state.

He said, ‘We want the Tata group to return to Singur or Bengal in some form, be it the automobile sector or any other sector. They are one of the oldest, respected and trusted industrial groups in the country.

Mamata Banerjee came to power by opposing the Nano Project

The movement against Tata Motors had helped bring Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to power and end 34 years of Left Front rule. On the other hand, it also became a symbol of Bengal’s industrial decline in the eyes of many investors. In 2008, there was a big shock in the corporate world due to the departure of the Nano project and the subsequent demolition of the almost finished factory. This created a lasting perception of policy uncertainty and opposition to large industrial investments in the state.

Nearly two decades later, the BJP wants to transform the same place from a symbol of migration to a symbol of the return of industries. Bhattacharya said that industrial renaissance is not possible in Bengal without fundamental changes in land acquisition policies. He said, ‘We did not have any comprehensive land policy. Mamata Banerjee had announced that the government will not acquire even an inch of land for industries and companies will have to purchase the land directly. Under such an impractical and flawed policy, industrialists cannot go door-to-door and buy land.

Amidst the election atmosphere in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress accused Aam Janata Unnayan Party President Humayun Kabir of making a secret agreement with the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has based it on a viral video, which has not been confirmed. In the viral video, Kabir is heard saying that he is ready to go to any extent to topple Mamata Banerjee’s government. In response to this, Humayun described this video as AI generated. BJP also called it a fake video.

Senior TMC leaders Arup Biswas, Kunal Ghosh and Firhad Hakim showed the video in the press conference and demanded an investigation into the matter by ED. This video is of 19 minutes, which is said to be from December 19 last year. In this, Kabir is allegedly making a strategy to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

What did BJP say?

BJP state spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said in response, “This is a blatant lie. A fake video. Whether it is fake or not, we do not know. Unless someone’s face is clearly visible, how can we say anything for sure? Humayun is Trinamool, and Trinamool is Humayun. By making Humayun a pawn, Trinamool is running this campaign of lies. West Bengal’s Bengali people are no longer interested in such things; we have been seeing all this for the last fifteen years.

He further said, “Now no result will be achieved by showing such things. By claiming that money is being distributed to distribute Muslim votes, they are just insulting the Muslim community more. Humayun and Trinamool are one and the same. You cannot mislead people. 2026 elections will witness the end of Trinamool. BJP is coming. BJP government is going to be formed in West Bengal.”

Humayun Kabir told AI generated video

Humayun Kabir said on the viral video, “It has been completely created using AI. Trinamool Congress is unable to compete with me politically. Trinamool is afraid of me. They are afraid of my political party, they are afraid of AJUP (Aam Janata Unnayan Party). They are afraid of the alliance with Asaduddin Owaisi. That is why they are releasing videos made by AI against me. If they really have power, then they should provide proof of it. That I have met or colluded with BJP leaders, I will accept it. If they cannot prove it, I will file a case against Kunal Ghosh, Bobby Hakim and Abhishek Banerjee.”

He further said, “I will ensure that they are punished. These AI videos are specifically made to insult the entire Muslim community and mislead Muslim voters. The Muslim vote bank has moved away from Mamata Banerjee. Today, Muslim people are speaking openly in support of Humayun Kabir; as a result, these conspiracies are being hatched against me out of fear. In earlier sting operations, Bobby Hakim was clearly seen taking money, what happened to him? If he If they have courage and strength, then this is the handiwork of Prateek Jain and Abhishek Banerjee. Look how many conspiracies they are playing!”

He said, “Whatever they do, they will not be able to escape. They can prove even a hundred rupees. They can prove it even a thousand rupees. If they prove it, then whatever they say, I will accept it. You cannot defame Humayun Kabir by making videos made with AI. You cannot separate Humayun Kabir from the Muslim community.”
