Why Fatty Liver Happens Without Alcohol: It is no longer correct to believe that just by looking healthy the liver will remain healthy. Nowadays, doctors are seeing the problem of fatty liver even in people who neither drink alcohol, nor smoke and only eat home-cooked food. This situation seems confusing because everything looks normal from outside, but internally the pressure on the liver keeps increasing. The real reason is our small daily habits, which often go unnoticed.

Disease related to lifestyle

According to doctors, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become a rapidly growing lifestyle disease. This happens when fat starts accumulating in the liver even without consuming alcohol. A big study published in Science Direct shows that this problem is now becoming common in urban India and it is directly related to our changing lifestyle.

Read this also- Benefits of Drinking Water: Tea and coffee will not quench the body’s thirst, adopt these habits to avoid dehydration.

What do experts say?

Dr Amrapali Patil told TOI, “It is a common misconception that liver disease is caused only by alcohol. Many non-alcohol factors also affect liver functioning.” In fact, the normal diet which we consider correct is no longer the same as before. Refined flour, hidden sugar, packaged snacks and frequent ordering of outside food gradually lead to accumulation of fat in the liver. The job of the liver is to process everything that enters the body, but when it becomes overloaded, fat starts accumulating.

Apart from this, less movement, sitting in one place for a long time and lack of sleep spoils the metabolism. According to the World Health Organization, lack of physical activity is a major cause of metabolic diseases. There are some reasons which people do not pay attention to, they are like taking medicines for a long time, crash dieting, irregular eating habits and sudden rapid weight loss. According to Dr. Patil, “All these things put additional pressure on the liver and can worsen the problem over time.”

Symptoms are not visible in the beginning

The biggest challenge is that its symptoms are not clearly visible in the beginning. People often ignore mild fatigue, flatulence or general discomfort. Dr. Patil says that in the initial stage, patients may not have any specific symptoms, and by the time the problem is understood, the condition can become serious. To avoid this, there is no need for huge changes, rather small and continuous improvements are more effective. Processed food, overly sweet drinks, eating late at night and taking unnecessary supplements should be avoided. At least 30 minutes walk daily, balanced diet and good sleep are very important for liver health.

What To Do If Ultrasound Shows Fatty Liver: Reading the words fatty liver in an ultrasound report becomes a cause of concern for many people. Fatty liver, medically known as MASLD, occurs when excessive fat accumulates in the liver cells. This problem can happen to anyone, young, elderly, diabetic patients or people of normal weight can also be affected by it. The special thing is that often it does not have any clear symptoms and it is detected only during investigation. The good news is that fatty liver is not permanent in the early stages. If the right steps are taken in time, it can be prevented and in many cases even cured.

What causes the problem?

Medically, fatty liver means that more than 5 percent fat has accumulated in the liver tissue. This is usually caused by metabolic problems such as obesity, insulin resistance, high fat in the blood or an unbalanced diet, not always due to alcohol. If this condition is ignored, over time it can lead to inflammation, fibrosis and loss of liver function. Liver can be considered like a factory, when excess fat accumulates in it, the speed of its work starts slowing down.

What do experts say?

Dr. Apoorva Pandey told TOI that there is no need to panic after hearing mention of fatty liver in ultrasound, because in most of the cases this condition can be reversed. According to him, this problem is often related to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, low physical activity or excessive alcohol consumption. There are two main types of fatty liver, non-alcoholic fatty liver and alcoholic fatty liver. Doctors advise that after receiving the report, first of all it is important to get correct information instead of panicking. You should consult your doctor to get your liver function test, fibrosis score and other risk factors like blood sugar or cholesterol checked.

What is its treatment?

Experts believe that the most effective treatment in the early stages of fatty liver is lifestyle changes. A study published in the Journal of Hepatology suggests that a balanced diet and regular exercise can help reduce fat and inflammation accumulated in the liver. According to Dr. Pandey, losing weight is one of the most important steps. Losing about 5 percent of total body weight can reduce fat stored in the liver, while losing 7 to 10 percent has also been shown to improve inflammation and fibrosis. Along with this, it is also important to have a balanced diet, regular exercise, control blood sugar and cholesterol and stay away from alcohol.

Can You Get Fatty Liver Without Drinking Alcohol: Fatty liver is a disease about which people often do not think seriously. The name sounds very mild, so many people ignore it. In the beginning, there is no significant pain or obvious symptoms, due to which this problem can remain hidden for years. Many times, by the time its symptoms become clearly visible, the liver has already suffered a lot of damage. In such a situation, it is important to understand some common myths and truths related to fatty liver. Let us tell you some myths related to this.

Does this happen only because of drinking alcohol?

The biggest misconception is that fatty liver occurs only in those who drink alcohol. Whereas the truth is that today in most cases it appears in the form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This means that people who do not drink alcohol can also get this disease.

Insulin resistance, obesity, poor diet and genetic reasons play an important role behind this. Gastroenterologist Dr Bhaskar Nandi told TOI that NAFLD is found in about 30 to 40 percent of people in India and most of these patients are also suffering from problems like diabetes, obesity or high cholesterol.

Fatty liver does not occur if weight is controlled

Another common belief is that if a person is of normal weight then he cannot have fatty liver. But doctors say that this problem is also found in many lean looking people, which is called Lean NAFLD. In fact, the visceral fat accumulated in the body, which accumulates around the internal organs, is not always visible from the outside.

assume everything is ok

Some people also believe that if liver enzymes are normal in blood test then everything is fine. But according to experts, despite fatty liver in the initial stage, enzymes like ALT and AST can remain normal. Therefore, it is not right to be completely sure on the basis of just one test.

Is fatty liver a minor problem and can be cured anytime?

Many people think that fatty liver is a minor problem and can be cured at any time. Although it can be controlled in the initial stages, if ignored for a long time, it can turn into serious conditions like non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis and later on cirrhosis. It can also cause liver failure and liver cancer.

They ignore them and the Chinese are responsible

Fatty liver often gives mild symptoms instead of severe pain, which people ignore. Eating too much sugar is not the only reason behind problems like constant fatigue, heaviness in the right side of the stomach, darkening of the skin around the neck or sudden increase in fat around the stomach. Refined carbohydrates, lack of physical activity, stress, poor sleep and irregular eating habits also increase its risk.

Read this also- Paint Fumes Health Effects: Why does cough and suffocation start happening after getting new paint in the house? Know the causes and prevention tips

These are also myths

It is not right to depend only on medicines in the treatment of fatty liver. Experts say that the most effective solution is change in lifestyle. Reducing weight by 7 to 10 percent, having a regular, balanced diet and getting enough sleep helps in making the liver healthy.

According to doctors, signs like increasing waist circumference, prediabetes, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and constant fatigue should be taken seriously. Getting checked from time to time, reducing processed food, walking daily and adopting healthy habits can be very helpful in preventing fatty liver.
