Can Liver Cirrhosis Happen Without Alcohol: Nowadays doctors are expressing concern about a trend which is shocking. Liver cirrhosis, once thought to be an alcohol-related disease, is now increasingly occurring even in people who drink little or no alcohol. The real reason for this is our daily habits, bad eating habits, increasing weight, diabetes and lifestyle of sitting for a long time.

This is a silent killer

This disease is often called a silent killer, because it keeps damaging the body gradually without any major symptoms. By the time its signs are clearly visible, the liver has been damaged to a great extent. Dr Wasim Ramzan Dar told TOI that earlier cirrhosis was linked only to alcohol, but now it is also linked to lifestyle diseases like obesity, poor diet, diabetes and fatty liver.

How does the problem of liver cirrhosis occur?

Actually, liver is a very important organ of the body, which works to digest food, filter toxins and keep metabolism balanced. But when there is repeated pressure on it, whether it is due to fat accumulation, infection or any other reason, gradually scar tissue starts forming in it. This condition later turns into cirrhosis. The initial symptoms are so mild that people often ignore them. Such as constant fatigue, loss of appetite, mild stomach discomfort or weight loss without any reason. Many people mistake it for stress or lack of sleep. But as the disease progresses, the symptoms also become severe. Swelling in the stomach, yellowing of the skin or eyes, frequent infections and feeling weak can be its signs.

What do experts say?

According to Dr. Shankar Kumar Gupta, liver cirrhosis is not a disease of just one organ, but it affects the entire body. It affects digestion, immunity and blood circulation. The most important thing is that if it is identified in time, the situation can be controlled to a great extent. For this, tests like liver function test, ultrasound and fibrosis test are done. In the initial stage, the damage can be slowed down or partially corrected by making changes in lifestyle.

Cases are increasing in India

The cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are increasing rapidly in India. According to reports, one out of every three people in urban areas may suffer from this problem. This is why taking it lightly can be dangerous. There is no need for very difficult measures for prevention, rather improving small habits is enough. Eating healthy home-cooked food, doing some exercise daily, keeping weight and diabetes under control, not taking medicines without doctor’s advice and getting tested from time to time, all these steps help in keeping the liver healthy for a long time. Doctors say that if the disease reaches advanced stage, the treatment becomes very difficult and expensive. In many cases, liver transplant is the last option left.

Early Signs Of Liver Disease In Hands: Liver is an organ of our body which silently performs hundreds of important tasks every day. It detoxifies the blood, helps in digestion and plays an important role in balancing the hormones of the body. But when a problem starts in the liver, it does not always appear in the form of severe symptoms. Many times its initial signs start appearing in our hands itself.

How do you tell by hand?

According to the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology, signs like changing skin color of hands, redness of palms, discoloration of nails, trembling of fingers or constant itching can indicate liver-related problems. In diseases like fatty liver, hepatitis or cirrhosis, such symptoms start appearing gradually. Recognizing these signs in time can save you from serious problems.

redness of palms

If your palms appear abnormally red, especially near the thumb and little finger, it is called palmar erythema. This often happens when the liver does not function properly and the level of estrogen hormone increases in the body. Although this can sometimes be seen even in healthy people, but if it is accompanied by symptoms like fatigue or jaundice, it is important to get checked by a doctor.

flexion of fingers

In some people, the skin under the palm gradually becomes thick and the fingers start turning inwards. This is called Dupuytren contracture. This problem may be related to long-term liver disease or excessive alcohol consumption.

Terry’s Nails

If the nails appear almost white and a light pink stripe is visible on their edge, it may be a sign of Terry’s nails. This is often caused by changes in blood flow and protein levels due to liver cirrhosis.

nail growth

Sometimes the ends of the fingers start appearing round and raised, which is called nail clubbing. It is usually associated with lung and heart diseases, but can also appear in long-term liver disease.

hand tremors

If there is a sudden jerk-like movement in the wrist or fingers when the hand is extended, then it is called asterixis. This could be a sign of a serious liver condition, in which the toxins accumulated in the body start affecting the brain.

itching in palms

Constant itching in the palms and soles of the feet without any rash can also be a sign of liver problem. This often happens when bile does not flow properly in the body. According to experts, if such changes are seen in the hands then they should not be taken lightly. With timely diagnosis and treatment, serious liver diseases can be prevented and overall health can be maintained.
