First signal of heart attack: We have often heard that heart attack can be identified by sudden severe chest pain. Pramod Kumar, cardiologist, Fortis, New Delhi, says that feeling constant fatigue, such fatigue which does not go away even after taking rest, can be an early sign of pressure on the heart.

When the heart becomes weak, it is not able to pump as much blood as the body needs. As a result, oxygen reaches the organs in less quantity and the body has to work harder. This is the reason why a person feels tired or lethargic all the time. Dr. Pramod Kumar says that “fatigue that cannot be explained by sleep, diet or stress can be the heart’s first SOS signal.”

Most people associate fatigue with aging, long working hours or lack of sleep. But if fatigue persists despite getting enough sleep, it could be a sign of a heart problem. Due to swelling and lack of oxygen, the body’s energy gets depleted, due to which the person always feels tired. Dr. Pramod Kumar explains that because fatigue is a common symptom, people do not associate it with heart disease. But if fatigue is accompanied by slight shortness of breath, indigestion, dizziness or pain in the jaw, then it can be a sign of a heart problem.

What is a silent heart attack?

Silent heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart muscles reduces or stops. It is called “silent” because it does not show any symptoms like severe chest pain. Its signs may be something like this-

• mild fatigue
• Nausea
• pain in jaw
• shoulder pain
• heartburn

Even though it is “silent”, it causes as much damage to the heart as a normal heart attack. Dr. Pramod Kumar says that silent heart attacks are more dangerous because patients do not reach the doctor on time. By the time they go to the hospital, the heart has suffered severe damage.

Which people are at greater risk?

Men and women may experience different symptoms. Severe chest pain is common in men, whereas women have more problems like back pain, fatigue, nausea or breathlessness. The elderly and post-menopausal women are more at risk because their symptoms are mild and often go unnoticed. Dr. Pramod Kumar says that “Many women bear the entire heart attack thinking it to be just stress or acidity. This delay can even cost them their lives.”

Timely early tests like ECG, echocardiogram and blood pressure check can avert major risks.
