When blood sugar levels remain high for a long time, these nerves start becoming weak. These may swell, leak, or even close. In some cases, the body forms new blood vessels, but these are extremely fragile and can cause more damage.

This condition is called diabetic retinopathy. It can gradually become serious without any initial symptoms and is one of the major causes of vision loss worldwide. Apart from this, diabetes can also cause other eye related problems. Eye problems caused by diabetes include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma. According to Dr. Nusrat Bukhari, “The risk of these problems is very high in people with uncontrolled diabetes.” The special thing is that the initial signs of these diseases are often not visible.
