Can mRNA Therapy Treat Lung Cancer And Muscle Loss: Scientists at Oregon State University in the US have developed a new technology that has the potential to simultaneously treat lung cancer and cachexia, a serious muscle wasting disease related to it. This research has been published in the prestigious journal Journal of Controlled Release and in this a new strategy has been adopted to deliver the genetic material directly to the tumor through lipid nanoparticles.

How was it prepared?

In this technique, scientists have prepared special types of nanocarriers, in which follistatin messenger RNA (mRNA) has been filled. When these nanoparticles reach the body, this mRNA induces cells to produce follistatin protein. On one hand, this protein helps in preventing the growth of tumors, while on the other hand it also promotes muscle growth. The research team found that these lipid nanoparticles get attached to a protein called vitronectin present in the blood. This protein helps them reach the lung cancer tumors directly. These nanoparticles get deposited at the right place through interaction with integrin receptors present on the surface of the tumor.

What do scientists say?

According to scientists, delivering mRNA based drugs directly to the lung tumors in the body has been a big challenge till now. But this new technology has offered a possible solution to this problem. Traditional nanoparticles often enter the body and get deposited in the liver, whereas with this new method a reduction in tumor size of about 2.5 times was observed. Lung cancer is considered one of the most deadly cancers worldwide. A condition called cachexia is also often associated with it, in which the patient’s weight decreases rapidly and muscles start becoming weak, even if he is taking enough food. This situation can prove to be very dangerous for cancer patients.

Are there any side effects?

The special thing about this new therapy is that it simultaneously affects two problems, cancer and muscle wasting, and no serious side effects have been revealed in the initial trials. However, scientists say that more pre-clinical research is still needed on this technology, but the initial results are quite encouraging. He hopes that in the future this therapy can be tested on humans and it can bring a big change in the treatment of cancer.
