Why Fatty Liver Happens Without Alcohol: It is no longer correct to believe that just by looking healthy the liver will remain healthy. Nowadays, doctors are seeing the problem of fatty liver even in people who neither drink alcohol, nor smoke and only eat home-cooked food. This situation seems confusing because everything looks normal from outside, but internally the pressure on the liver keeps increasing. The real reason is our small daily habits, which often go unnoticed.

Disease related to lifestyle

According to doctors, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become a rapidly growing lifestyle disease. This happens when fat starts accumulating in the liver even without consuming alcohol. A big study published in Science Direct shows that this problem is now becoming common in urban India and it is directly related to our changing lifestyle.

What do experts say?

Dr Amrapali Patil told TOI, “It is a common misconception that liver disease is caused only by alcohol. Many non-alcohol factors also affect liver functioning.” In fact, the normal diet which we consider correct is no longer the same as before. Refined flour, hidden sugar, packaged snacks and frequent ordering of outside food gradually lead to accumulation of fat in the liver. The job of the liver is to process everything that enters the body, but when it becomes overloaded, fat starts accumulating.

Apart from this, less movement, sitting in one place for a long time and lack of sleep spoils the metabolism. According to the World Health Organization, lack of physical activity is a major cause of metabolic diseases. There are some reasons which people do not pay attention to, they are like taking medicines for a long time, crash dieting, irregular eating habits and sudden rapid weight loss. According to Dr. Patil, “All these things put additional pressure on the liver and can worsen the problem over time.”

Symptoms are not visible in the beginning

The biggest challenge is that its symptoms are not clearly visible in the beginning. People often ignore mild fatigue, flatulence or general discomfort. Dr. Patil says that in the initial stage, patients may not have any specific symptoms, and by the time the problem is understood, the condition can become serious. To avoid this, there is no need for huge changes, rather small and continuous improvements are more effective. Processed food, overly sweet drinks, eating late at night and taking unnecessary supplements should be avoided. At least 30 minutes walk daily, balanced diet and good sleep are very important for liver health.

Can Thin People Get Fatty Liver: Often people believe that if the stomach is flat and the weight is normal, then the body is completely healthy. But doctors say that sometimes a silent problem is growing inside the normal looking body, that is fatty liver. This happens when excessive fat accumulates in the liver cells. The special thing is that this problem is not limited only to obese people, but is increasing rapidly in thin looking people also. This is called Lean Fatty Liver or Lean NAFLD i.e. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

When is it considered a fatty liver problem?

Fatty liver is considered when more than 5 percent fat accumulates in the liver cells. Due to this, the important functions of the liver start getting affected, such as filtering toxic substances from the body and maintaining balanced sugar and fat levels. In the beginning this disease does not cause any special pain or symptoms, hence people often get to know about it only during a simple blood test or ultrasound.

Why do thin people have problems?

A question arises in the minds of many people that if someone is thin then how can fat accumulate in his liver. According to a study by the US National Institutes of Health, weight alone does not determine liver health. Sometimes the visceral fat that accumulates inside the body, especially around the organs, causes more harm. A person may look thin on the outside, but internal fat can affect the liver. Experts say that poor eating habits, sitting for long periods, stress and genetic reasons also increase this risk.

Read this also – Why are couples facing fertility problems even in their 20s, know from experts

Lifestyle is also responsible

Nowadays many people eat less food, but do not eat right food. Packaged snacks, sweet drinks, white bread, refined carbohydrates and foods high in sugar gradually put pressure on the liver. The liver converts excess sugar into fat and this fat gets accumulated over time. This danger is more visible among South Asian people, especially Indians. Research shows that fat in the body of Indians often accumulates around the stomach and liver. Apart from this, poor gut health can also cause swelling and increase in fat in the liver.

How can this be fixed?

The good thing is that fatty liver can be corrected in the early stages. With a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep and stress control, the liver gradually starts healing. According to experts, walking for a while after meals is also beneficial for the liver. Therefore, it is not right to judge health only by body size. Regular health check-ups, blood tests and tests like ultrasound help in timely identification of fatty liver.
