Good vs Bad Cholesterol: Cholesterol complaint is often seen in people who are fond of food, which is the result of their unhealthy food and irregular diet. Amidst all this, people have come to a simple conclusion, in which cholesterol has been divided into two parts – good and bad. In this, LDL is called bad cholesterol and HDL is called good cholesterol. People become happy after seeing the HDL numbers in their reports, but is this belief true or is the truth behind it something else? Let us know.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a wax-like fat, which helps in making cells, vitamin D and hormones in our body. Our liver makes cholesterol as per the need of the body, but we also consume it in large quantities through food and drinks. Although it is necessary, but when its level increases, it deposits plaque in the artery walls, which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Is LDL really bad cholesterol?

LDL is often thought to be responsible for heart disease, but not every LDL is the same; some LDL particles are large and light, while others are small and dense. Small and dense particles play a greater role in the formation of plaque in the arteries. According to Dr. Diwakar Kumar of Asian Hospital, “Not every LDL is harmful, just one number of LDL does not tell the whole picture. Even if the level of LDL is same in two people, its effect can be different.”

Is HDL really good cholesterol?

HDL is commonly called good cholesterol because it helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood, but having too much of it does not always guarantee safety. According to Dr. Kumar, “If the level of HDL is very high then it can also be a cause for concern, especially when the lifestyle is not right. According to Dr. Neha Shah, “It is true that HDL protects the body and LDL increases the risk, but these numbers alone do not tell the whole truth. For example, there can be a difference between two people with HDL of 44 if their triglycerides are different, one has 90 and the other has 210, the number is the same, but its effect on the body condition is different. The same thing applies to LDL also. Only numbers are visible in the report, but the real difference lies in its small and dense particles, which damage the nerves.

How to avoid the danger of cholesterol?

Cholesterol is affected by your everyday habits. Less sleep, more stress, smoking and ultra-processed foods can bring you closer to the risk of cholesterol. To avoid this, doing regular exercise is beneficial. Apart from this, it is important to take balanced food and healthy diet daily and doing yoga or meditation can also be helpful to reduce stress.
