Can Bluetooth Earphones Increase Cancer Risk: Nowadays, wireless earphones have become a part of people’s everyday life. From office calls to music and social media, a question has been constantly raised about these devices that remain in the ears for hours, whether the radiation emitted from Bluetooth earphones is dangerous for health and can it cause cancer? In viral claims on the internet, it is even being said that wearing them is like keeping a microwave near the head. Let us tell you how much truth is there in these claims and how much is myth.

What do experts say?

To remove this confusion, Dr. Jai Jagannathan, neurosurgeon at Michigan Neurosurgery Institute of America, recently clarified the situation on the basis of scientific facts through a video. In this video shared on Instagram on October 13, 2025, he responded to the viral clip in which wearing AirPods was described as being exposed to a microwave.

According to Dr. Jagannathan, this comparison is completely misleading. He said that the radiation emitted from wireless earphones is “non-ionizing”, which is not considered capable of damaging DNA. This is the reason why concrete evidence directly linking it to cancer has not been found yet.

Radiation is much less than mobile phones

He says that the radiation emitted from Bluetooth earphones is very less as compared to mobile phones. According to statistics, the radiation received from devices like AirPods can be about 10 to 400 times less than that from mobile phones. In such a situation, if no concrete evidence of cancer has been found due to the use of mobile phones, then in the case of earphones the risk is considered to be even less.

What is the example given?

The research that is often cited regarding claims related to cancer is the study of the National Toxicology Program (NTP). In this study, rats were exposed to radiofrequency radiation for a long time. In this, a slight increase in the cases of certain types of heart cancer was seen in male rats, whereas no such obvious effect was seen in female rats.

Dr. Jagannathan tells that this study was later reviewed by the American Food and Drug Administration. The FDA clearly said that on the basis of this research, a direct relationship between cancer and radiation in humans cannot be proven. Along with this, it is also important that the amount of radiation given to the rats in the study was under different circumstances from the radiation received from mobile phones or earphones in real life. According to experts, based on the current scientific evidence, it would be wrong to say that wireless earphones cause cancer.
