Best Way To Remove Pesticides From Apples: We bring fruits or vegetables from the market and use them by washing them with normal tap water. This rule is followed by most of the people in almost all parts of the world. However, we should take some precautions while preparing fruits and vegetables. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, they should at least be washed thoroughly under running water to remove any dust and bacteria from them. But the question is that if there is pesticide residue left on the fruits, then how to clean them? Let us tell you what should be done for this.

How can pesticides be removed?

To find the answer to this question, researchers from Manchester University conducted a study, which was published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Industry. In this study, it was specifically observed that which is the most effective method of removing pesticide from apple. Two types of pesticides, thiabendazole and phosmet, were used in the research. For the experiment, apples were kept in contact with these chemicals for 24 hours. After this they were washed in three different ways. These included plain tap water as recommended by the FDA, Clorox bleach solution that is used in post-harvest industry, and a solution of water and baking soda that can be easily prepared at home. After using these three methods, better results were obtained.

What was the result of this research?

Compared to all three methods, the baking soda solution proved to be the most effective. If the apple is soaked in this solution for 12 to 15 minutes and then washed with clean water, both the pesticides present on its surface are removed to a great extent. However, the researchers also warned that the pesticides that had penetrated into the apple peel, called “internalized pesticides”, were not completely eliminated. In such a situation, removing the peel can be a better option, but it also reduces the benefits of the vitamins and minerals present in the peel. Research has shown that washing with Clorox bleach solution for only two minutes, as is usually done, is not enough to completely remove the pesticide from the surface of the apple. Accordingly, you can adopt baking soda solution, however, you should be careful about things during this time.
