Why do we celebrate Ganga Dussehra?

Ganga Dussehra is a festival dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is celebrated as the day when Ganga descended on earth to purify the cursed souls of Bhagiratha’s ancestors. Before coming to earth, Goddess Ganga resided in the Kamandal of Lord Brahma and brought with her the purity of heaven to earth. Ganga Dussehra is not just a festival, but a divine opportunity for spiritual purification, destruction of sins and attainment of salvation.

According to Narad Purana – Gangasnanam tu yah kuryat jyeshthashukladshamyan. Dashajanmkritam sin Tatkshanadev Nashyati॥

Importance of bathing in Ganga on Ganga Dussehra

According to Skanda Purana – Name of Dussehra is Papanaam Harati Iti Dussehra. Gangayan bath matrena sarvapapayah pramuchyate.

Meaning:- Dussehra means “remover of ten types of sins”. On this day, just by taking a bath in the Ganga, a person becomes free from all sins. Ganga water is considered like nectar, which purifies the soul. Donations made on this day, like water, clothes, food etc., give manifold results.

Ganga Dussehra Puja Method

• Wake up in Brahma Muhurta and take bath in river Ganga.
• If you cannot go to Ganga Ghat, then mix some Ganga water in the bathing water at home and take bath.
• While bathing, chant this mantra: “Om Namah Shivay Gangayai Namah”
• After bathing, face towards the east and take a pledge that you are observing Ganga Dussehra fast and worship.
• Pray in your mind for the destruction of sins and happiness and prosperity.
• Install the picture/statue of Mother Ganga at a clean place or a post on the river bank.
• Offer water and flowers to Mother Ganga
• Perform Aarti by lighting incense sticks
• Recite Ganga Stotra or “Ganga Lahari”
• Donate a lamp to the Ganga or any reservoir in the evening.
• Lighting 10 lamps is considered auspicious (symbolizing the destruction of ten sins).
• It is considered best to make 10 types of donations on this day:
• Water, food, clothes, fruits, pitcher, umbrella, fan etc.
• Donate to a Brahmin or a needy person.
• Chant the mantra “Om Gangayai Namah” at least 108 times.
