Risk Of Brain Stroke Due To High Blood Pressure: Surviving a stroke is a great relief for any patient, but the real challenge begins after that. Many people who recover from stroke remain at risk of having another stroke. This risk is especially high in those patients who have suffered a bleeding stroke i.e. intracerebral hemorrhage. Why do strokes happen again?

The biggest cause of this type of stroke is high blood pressure. When high BP remains high for a long time, the walls of the blood vessels start weakening. Gradually this condition can become so serious that the vein bursts and bleeding starts in the brain. Therefore, the most effective way to prevent another stroke is to keep blood pressure under control. However, this work is not as easy as it sounds. Many patients have to take different types of medicines at different times of the day. Especially for the elderly or people suffering from other diseases, it becomes difficult to follow this routine. Sometimes the medicine is missed, and sometimes it is not taken at the right time, due to which the effect of the treatment gets reduced.

What came out in the study?

According to the report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, keeping this problem in mind, a new study was conducted, in which a way to make the treatment easier was found. The researcher worked on a pill in which three common blood pressure medicines were mixed in small quantities. This pill has been named GMRx2. This study was conducted under the TRIDENT trial, in which more than 1600 patients from different countries participated. All these patients had previously suffered a stroke causing bleeding in the brain and their blood pressure was still above normal levels.

What was the result?

Patients were divided into two groups. One group was given this new combination pill, while the other group was given placebo along with usual treatment. After this the results of both the groups were compared. The results were quite surprising. In patients who took this combination pill, the risk of repeat stroke reduced by about 40 percent. This is considered a major achievement, because repeat strokes often prove to be more serious.

Also effective for these things

Apart from this, blood pressure was also found to be under better control in the patients taking this pill. Researchers say that even a small improvement in blood pressure can give big benefits in the long run. The study also revealed that this pill reduced the risk of serious heart-related problems, such as heart attack and death due to heart disease. This means that this treatment can be beneficial not only for stroke but also for heart health.

However, there are still some limitations. This study has been followed only for a few years, so the long-term effect remains to be understood. Besides this, it is not necessary that this treatment is suitable for every patient.
