Latest government records till June 2026

In the recently concluded Rabi season 2026-27 in the country, the government has broken records by purchasing wheat from farmers. According to government data, by the beginning of June 2026, the total stock of wheat in the central pool has reached about 513 lakh metric tonnes i.e. 51.32 million tonnes. This stock is considered to be the best in the last few years.

Because this year, exceeding its fixed target, the government has purchased more than 350 lakh metric tonnes of wheat directly from farmers at the minimum support price i.e. MSP. Let us tell you that as per the rules of July 1, the government requires only 275.80 lakh metric tonnes of buffer stock. But at present we have reserved almost double the wheat required.

How many years can we survive without farming?

Now let’s talk about the biggest question that if wheat is not grown in the country, then how many years will this stock last? Under government ration schemes like Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana and Public Distribution System (PDS), about 180 to 200 lakh metric tonnes of wheat is distributed free or at very low prices every year to about 81 crore people of the country.

According to this, this government stock of 513 lakh metric tonnes locked in warehouses can easily meet the ration needs of the poor section of the entire country for two and a half to three years continuously, even without new farming.

If we add to this the total annual domestic consumption of the country i.e. about 1000 lakh metric tons and also include the open market. So even without growing a single grain, the entire country can happily eat wheat for at least 6 months without any shortage.

Pakistan’s largest wheat producing area is Punjab. About 80 percent of the country’s wheat comes from here. At this time, the movement of wheat from Punjab has been banned uncertain. Due to this, there has been a huge shortage of flour in areas like Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. From the plate of poor families, bread has started disappearing.

The Punjab government says that no official ban has been imposed. According to officials, posts have been installed to keep a close watch on unusual movement, but the reality is that wheat and flour -filled trucks are being stopped at posts and many trains have been seized. The rest of the provinces allege that this policy is a violation of Article 151 of the Constitution, which guarantees free trade across the country.

Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s resentment
