How Effective Is Dengue Vaccine Qdenga: Amidst the increasing cases of dengue across the world, expectations regarding the dengue vaccine named Qdenga have increased. According to reports, this vaccine can be launched in India by 2026, although for this it is necessary to get the approval of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization and complete the process of clinical trials. This vaccine has been developed by Japanese company Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, which can be produced in India in collaboration with Hyderabad-based Biological E under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Experts believe that this can prove to be an important step in view of the rapidly increasing dengue cases in the country.

Cases are increasing in India

Actually, dengue cases are continuously increasing in India. According to research published in the Bioinformatics Journal, an increase of about 39.4 percent has been recorded in dengue cases between 2014 and 2023. Its cluster outbreaks have also been reported in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Dr. Rashmi Khadparkar associated with Agillus Diagnostics told NDTV that dengue has become hyperendemic in India, that is, all four of its virus types are spreading simultaneously. This is the reason why the need for such a vaccine was being felt for a long time.

What is this vaccine?

Qdenga is a live attenuated tetravalent vaccine, which means it has been designed to protect against all four major types of dengue virus – DEN1, DEN2, DEN3 and DEN4. According to Dr. Hari Kishan Burugu of Yashoda Hospital, this vaccine is different from the earlier vaccine Dengvaxia, which was recommended only for those people who had previously had dengue.

Approval has been received in these countries

This vaccine has so far been approved in more than 40 countries, including Europe, Britain, Indonesia and Brazil. Additionally, it has also received prequalification from the World Health Organization, which reflects global confidence in its safety and effectiveness. Talking about clinical trials, this vaccine has been tested on more than 60,000 people across the world. At the same time, Phase-3 trial was conducted in India on about 480 people aged between 4 to 60 years, in which its safety and immune response were assessed.

How dangerous is dengue disease?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease, which is mainly spread through the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle pain and skin rash. In severe cases, this dengue can turn into hemorrhagic fever, which can also be fatal.
