Apple has created record breaking iPhones in India in the last one year (between March 2024 to March 2025). According to Bloomberg’s report, Apple has produced iPhones worth $ 22 billion (about Rs 1.83 lakh crore) in India. This is 60 percent more than last year. This means that one of every five sold worldwide iPhone is now made in India. Until a few years ago, this figure was almost zero.

Where are the factories of iPhone?

The iPhone is mainly being built in the factories of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These factories are running foxconn, tata electronics and pegatron. The export of iPhone from India has also increased rapidly. According to IT minister Ashwini Vaishnav, India exported $ 17.4 billion iphones last year.

Why did Apple come out of China towards India?

Apple has taken this step to reduce dependence on China. Business tension between Kovid Lockdown, China-America and American tariff forced Apple to change their strategy.

When the US imposed heavy tariffs on electronic goods coming from China (up to 145 per cent on iPhone), Apple started sending US iPhones directly from India.

India is now a manufacturing hub

Apple is now assembling all its models, even premium titanium pro models in India. According to Bloomberg’s report, Apple has sold $ 8 billion in India in 2024, while its market share is only 8 percent. That is, even though Apple’s sales share may be low, the demand for iPhone in India is continuously increasing.

The effect of long thinking of CEO Tim Cook

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook often says, “In the long arc of time…”, that is, keep a long distance thinking. When Apple’s shares fell drastically due to tariffs, they acted peacefully and immediately started shipping iPhones from India. This strategy of Cook is now proving beneficial for the company.

Foxconn’s big bet

According to the Times of India report, Apple’s supply company Foxconn is now preparing to set up a new plant on 300 acres of land near Noida in Uttar Pradesh. This plant can become Foxconn’s second largest factory after Bengaluru. This area is near a semiconductor unit and jewelry airport, which further increases its importance. Foxconn is planning to work on not only iPhone, but also electric vehicles, digital health and energy technology in India.
