New type of diabetes: In today’s time, even at a young age, people are getting a lot of diabetes problem. So many of us will be well aware of this disease. Many people will know that there are 2 types of diabetes, including type-1 and type-2. But perhaps you are not aware that people can also have diabetes called Type 5 in addition to these two diabetes. A global task force will examine this rare i.e. less known situation, which is quite different from type 1 and type 2 diabetes. According to media reports, Professor Peter Schwartz, President of International Diabetes Federation this week, announced this at the World Congress of Diabetes 2025 in Bangkok this week.

Type 1 and type 2 are completely different

Type 5 diabetes affects low weight people. Along with this, those who have no history of diabetes in their family and which do not see common symptoms of type 1 or type 2 diabetes are more likely to be diabetes.

Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor of the Department of Endocrinology at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, said, “People suffering from type 5 diabetes are usually underweight, there is no history of diabetes in their family and they have no such symptoms which do not match the type 1 or type 2 diabetes.”

Type-5 diabetes is not insulin resistant

In 2022, Dr. Thomas of CMC and Dr. Riddhi Dasgupta, along with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York Professor Meredith Hawkins, studied the situation and identified major physical differences. The results were published in the Journal of Diabetes Care.
