Friendship with notes at a young age

Kesarbai Kelkar was born on 13 July 1892 in a small village in Goa. At that time, Portuguese used to rule in Goa. The British ruled in India at that time. Since childhood, he had a different attachment to music. Seeing Kesarbai Kelkar, born in the Devdasi tradition, people thought that his destination would be limited to the temple only. But he broke the traditions and made his friendship with the notes and brought his voice to the sky. Kesarbai was very fond of music, so she started learning classical music only at the age of 16 and she came to Mumbai for this. At that time, he had learned from many gurus, but the desire he was looking for was still incomplete.

Inheritance has become ‘where are you’

Kesarbai Kelkar’s dream was to take education from Ustad Alladia Khan. She went to her, she refused to test Kesarbai for three months. But she did not stop disappointed, then she sought help from Shahu Maharaj and from here a new twist in her life. For 25 years, he put it in his Sur Sadhana. It is said that she did not sing, but breathed in music. He believed that music could only be felt, but cannot be sold. That is why she did not recording. Nevertheless, one of his songs sung in raga Bhairavi got the country which became a legacy.

NASA sent his voice in space

In 1977, NASA sent Voyager 1 vehicle which was going beyond our solar system, with the most beautiful voices of 27 countries. His sung ‘Jat Kahan Ho’ was selected on the suggestion of Ethnomicologist Robert E. Brown. He said that it is one of the most beautiful recording of India’s music. She used to sing so beautiful that in 1938, Rabindranath Tagore gave her the title of ‘Surashree’, which means ‘Queen of Suron’. Apart from this, apart from Padma Bhushan, he also received many honors. Kesarbai died in 1977 itself, but even today his voice is echoing somewhere in the space.
