19-year-old India’s Pooja Singh created history by winning the gold medal in high jump on Friday (May 29) in the 22nd Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships. While performing a historic feat in Hong Kong, Pooja also broke a 14 year old record.

Pooja broke the 14-year-old senior national record with a jump of 1.93 meters, which was set by Sahana Kumari in 2012. There was a record of jump of 1.92 meters in the name of Sahana. With this, Pooja became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the women’s high jump event of the championship.

Let us tell you that Pooja first improved the Under-20 national record by jumping 1.91 meters and ensured the gold medal. Then he made an even bigger jump and won the senior national record.

Also crossed the qualification mark of Commonwealth Games

With a jump of 1.93 metres, Pooja also crossed the qualification mark for the Commonwealth Games 2026, which was 1.92 metres. However, it is not yet clear whether the Indian Athletics Federation will grant him exemption or not, because the Federation Cup, the last event to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, has already ended.

Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya encouraged Pooja Singh by sharing a post from his X account. He wrote, “TOPS athlete Pooja performed brilliantly by winning gold medal at the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships. Her jump of 1.93 meters broke the national record.
