Government Job Craze: There was a time when a corporate job in a big city was considered the biggest dream of the youth. Good salary, glass office, multinational company and fast career growth were considered the signs of success. But now the picture is changing rapidly. Today, a large number of youth have left corporate jobs and are preparing for government jobs like UPSC, SSC, Bank, Railways and State Public Service Commission. Questions are also being raised as to why this is happening. Actually, the biggest reason for this is not only salary, but also job security, stable career and social prestige. In recent years, frequent lay-offs in private companies, economic uncertainty and increasing work pressure have again attracted the youth towards government jobs.

Hundreds of contenders for one job

According to the official data given by the government in the Parliament, in the last few years more than 22 crore applications were received for central government jobs. Whereas out of these only 7.22 lakh candidates could get jobs. That means on an average more than 300 candidates were in the fray for one government job. This figure shows that the competition to get a government job is continuously increasing. Every year lakhs of candidates are applying for UPSC, SSC, Railway, Banking and State level recruitment exams, while the number of vacancies remains limited. In many states, there have been instances of lakhs of applications being received for jobs like peon.

Why is there so much desire for government jobs among the youth?

In India, a government job is still considered the safest option for permanent employment. It includes timely salary, allowances, less risk of job loss, facilities like pension and social prestige. This is the reason why many families still motivate their children for government jobs. On the contrary, there is a constant concern about job security in the private sector. Large-scale layoffs in the last few years, especially in the IT and corporate sectors, have weakened the confidence of the youth.

Increasing work pressure in corporate jobs

According to International Labor Organization data, employees in India work an average of 45.8 hours per week. Whereas in developed countries this figure is much less. The average work week in the United States is 38 hours, in the United Kingdom it is approximately 35.9 hours, and in Japan, employees work an average of 36.6 hours per week. According to the report, about 51 percent of the employees in India work more than 49 hours every week. Which is considered excessive working hours as per international demands. In such a situation, work life balance has also emerged as a big concern for the youth.

Is only government job the solution?

Experts believe that the attraction of government jobs is right in its place, but government jobs are not possible for all the youth. Every year lakhs of new youth enter the job market, while government vacancies remain limited. In such a situation, it is necessary to strengthen the private sector, startups, entrepreneurship and skill-based employment opportunities.
