Cough syrups bans: The Government of India has recently banned the use of some phlegm syrup for children under 4 years of age. The reason for this decision is the two components present in these drugs, chlorphinyramine maleet and phenyliane hydrochloride. Both these components are usually used in the treatment of allergies and colds, but sufficient security data is not available in young children about their effects. Therefore, these medicines have been banned.

Government action

According to the notification issued on 15 April 2025, the manufacture, sale and distribution of these drugs has been banned. The manufacturers have been instructed to clearly warn on the label and packaging of their products that this combination should not be used in children under 4 years of age.

Delhi High Court directive

Companies like Glenmark and Zuvantas Healthcare filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against this notification. The court clarified that this ban would not be applicable to stock built before April 15, but all manufacturers have been ordered to issue public notices in major newspapers to inform doctors, pharmacists and general public.

Some important tips for parents

• Before giving any kind of phlegm syrup to children under 4 years of age, consult a doctor.
• If you already have phlegm syrup of ban brands, check their labels and safely destroy them when needed.
• Take home remedies for cold and cold symptoms in children and alternative remedies suggested by the doctor.
