Dayanidhi Maran’s Controversial Statement: DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has created a big political controversy by comparing the women of North India and the women of Tamil Nadu.

Maran, a four-time MP from Chennai Central, said that while in Tamil Nadu women are encouraged to pursue studies and careers, in North India women are expected to only work in the kitchen and bear children.

Addressing students at a college, Maran said, ‘Our girls should be confident and proud with a laptop, whether you go for an interview or do post graduation. This confidence is there in Tamil Nadu, where we ask girls to study. What do they say in reply? Girls, don’t go to work, stay at home, stay in the kitchen, give birth to a child, this is your job.

She further said, “This is Tamil Nadu. A Dravidian state. The land of Karunanidhi, Annadurai and Chief Minister MK Stalin. Your progress here is the progress of Tamil Nadu. That’s why global companies come to Chennai, because everyone here is educated, not only in Tamil but also in English. They lead. The government plays an important role in the progress of women. We will always get your love and support.” The DMK MP also said that Tamil Nadu is the best state in India and MK Stalin is the best Chief Minister of the country.

Udhayanidhi Stalin distributed laptops

Deputy Chief Minister and MK Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi Stalin was also present in this program. He distributed laptops to students under the ‘Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil’ scheme. Udhayanidhi Stalin said, “It is often said that when girls complete their studies, they make a huge contribution to the society. We are proud of all our girl students.”

BJP’s strong counterattack

BJP has reacted sharply to Maran’s statement. BJP spokesperson in Tamil Nadu Narayanan Tirupati said, “Once again Dayanidhi Maran has abused North Indian people. I feel very bad how these people are allowed to do this, even though it happens from the DMK side. I don’t think Dayanidhi Maran has common sense.”

BJP leader Anila Singh said, “Maran’s comments are unfortunate. He has forgotten that he lives in India and India worships power. If he thinks power can be divided between North, South, East and West, then he does not understand our culture. I want to ask him what he has to say about women in the party with which he has aligned, about Sonia Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra or our President Draupadi Murmu. This is divisive.” Politics is not going to work.”

DMK defended Maran’s statement

However, DMK has supported Maran’s statement. Party’s T.K.S. Ilangovan said, “It depends on the party that is ruling the state. There is no doubt that wherever the Congress is ruling, they are doing good work for women’s education. Here in Tamil Nadu, we fought for women and empowered them. We gave them education. We gave them employment. We have also reserved seats in government jobs. We have been working for the advancement of women’s rights since the beginning. In the North, there is no one to fight for women.”

Even before the discussion on exploitation and objectification of women in films started, Smita Patil was challenging this system. At a time when glamor and sexualized images were considered the easiest way to sell films, Smita clearly said that using women merely as marketing tools was wrong.

This thing has been imposed on the Indian audience that look, there is sex in it. If you are half naked then come and watch the movie. This has become an attitude which is very wrong. If the film has to run, if the film is saying one thing from the true heart, then only that film will run. A film does not work with such posters alone.

Taking a jibe at RJD, PM Modi said, “The things that identify RJD’s Jungle Raj are harshness, cruelty, bitterness, bad culture, bad governance and corruption.” He further said, “There is a fight between RJD and Congress. Bihar Elections 2025: Women who once used to just clap at election rallies have now started taking the stage themselves. Now election slogans are not only echoed in the voices of men in the streets of Bihar, but the noise of women asking for votes is heard at every intersection. But the big question is, have women really got equal rights in this changing picture? Data from 2010 to 2025 show that women are ahead of men in voting, but when it comes to distributing tickets, politics still leaves them behind.

Women’s participation in elections

The electoral history of Bihar is witness to the fact that women here have always been ahead of men in terms of voting. According to statistics, in the last three assembly elections, the percentage of women voters has been more than that of male voters every time. That is, she has been giving the message of moving forward in this fight for democracy, but when it comes to her direct participation in politics i.e. the election and victory of the ticket, then the picture looks a bit blurry.

Beginning of hope in 2010

In the year 2010, a total of 214 women candidates had contested. At that time Congress had given tickets to maximum 32 women, but unfortunately could not win even a single one. Whereas JDU had fielded 23 women candidates, BJP 12 and RJD 11. This time women left a big impact, 21 women from JDU, 10 from BJP and one independent candidate reached the assembly. That is, even though the victory rate of women was low, this beginning was very promising.

Changing times of 2015

By 2015, the number of women candidates increased to 272. This time JDU, RJD and BJP all three showed confidence in women. JDU and RJD have given tickets to 10 women each, BJP to 14 women. A total of 28 women reached the assembly, among them 9 from JDU, 10 from RJD, 4 from BJP, 4 from Congress and one independent. This was the time when the presence of women started being felt in the politics of Bihar.

2020 numbers increased, success decreased

The picture became more interesting in 2020. This year 370 women showed courage to contest elections. But the victory figure stagnated, only 26 women could reach the assembly. BJP gave tickets to 13 women this year and 9 of them won, i.e. 69% success rate, which was the highest.

10 out of 23 women of RJD won, while JDU’s success rate was around 27%. But an in-depth analysis of the data shows that many parties reduced the rate of giving tickets to women. Parties like Congress and CPI(ML) fielded less women than last time.

2025: rising aspirations, declining stakes

Now coming to the current phase of 2025 Bihar elections. This time, 34 women are in the fray from the NDA and 30 from the Grand Alliance. RJD has fielded the maximum number of women candidates (23), followed by Jan Suraj Party (25) and BSP (26).

But major parties like JDU and BJP have reduced the number of women tickets. JDU has given a chance to 13 candidates and BJP has also given a chance to 13 candidates. This clearly means that there were many promises to increase women’s representation, but in reality the steps did not move that fast.

What does the trend tell?

In 15 years, the number of women candidates increased from 214 to 370, but the success rate remained stuck at around 7%. That means participation has increased, but the path to victory is still difficult. Experts believe that in view of the activism of women voters in Bihar, parties will now have to change their thinking about ticket distribution. Because the figures clearly say that women are ahead in the vote bank, but are still lagging behind in power.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has taken a big decision giving equal rights to women. The government has made changes in the Tamil Nadu Factory Rules, 1950 to allow women to do about 20 such jobs, which women were prevented from doing because they were considered ‘dangerous’. Apart from this, if a female employee wants to do night shift, there is also a proposal to amend the rule of taking written consent from her.

Last month, the Labor Welfare and Skill Development Department had issued a draft notification to amend the Tamil Nadu Factory Rules. If anyone had any objection to this, it had to be sent to the government within 45 days of the notification issued on September 9. The hazardous occupations in which women are recommended include electrolytic process, lead process, glass manufacturing, manufacturing or treatment of lead or lead. However, the government wants to amend the rules to ban the entry of pregnant women workers into these jobs.

Hazardous gas and petroleum generation, blasting, liming and dyeing of raw leather and hides, graphite powdering, lead material printing presses and type foundries, cashew processing, dyeing of mats, mats and carpets in coir and fiber factories, stenciling and painting and pottery making are also included in the list of jobs in which women can now work.

However, in Tamil Nadu, women are already doing many risky jobs like harvesting seaweed, fishing etc. Now preparations are being made to allow them to work in loud noise and high vibration. This means that in the times to come, they will also have to do work related to poisonous gases, petroleum and chemicals. However, it also has its own disadvantages such as the risk of injury from harvesting seaweed, the fear of contracting diseases from fishing, and the health problems associated with hazardous materials in factories.
