India is a country known for its diversity. Here everything is seen here, green deserts, golden desert and blue sea. But an inequality is also hidden between this diversity. This inequality is of richness and poverty. Due to this problem, there has been a change in many times from the power of the country to the system. This gap has started since Kovid in recent years. In the last one year, there has been a rapid decrease in poverty data in India. A latest report of the World Bank has come, which has seen a decrease in the rate of poverty in India in the last 11 years.

How much poverty has reduced in India

According to this report, poverty in India has come down from 27.1% in 2011-12 to 5.3% in 2023-24. In this report, the World Bank revised its poverty line and fixed three dollars per day based on 2021 prices, which is 15% more than the earlier $ 2.15 limit. According to this new standard, 5.44 million people in India were living less than three million dollars per day in 2024. According to the report, the rate of excessive poverty has also come down between 2011 and 2023 and it has come down from 16.2% to 2.3%. According to this, about 17.1 crore people came above the poverty line so far. Poverty figures in both rural and urban areas have decreased. This report states that 54% of extremely poor people live in five most populous states.

How many people have been rich so far

Talking about the rich in India, the Night Frank’s The Wealth Report 2025, which came in March 2025, states that the number of rich is rising rapidly here. Not only this, the figure of richness is expected to increase further in the coming few years. High net worth individuals in India, ie those who have assets worth more than Rs 87 crore, can reach around 93,753 by 2028. In the year 2024, this number has increased from 80,686 to 85,698. In the next four years, more than 8000 new rich are expected to be added to it. This shows India’s economy growing rapidly. India is also becoming one of the countries making wealth in the world.

World Bank Report on GDP: The World Bank report on the GDP front for India is going to give a big relief. On Tuesday, the World Bank has estimated India’s economic growth rate of 6.3 percent for the financial year 2025-26 amid global uncertainties. That is, India will remain the fastest economy in the world. Earlier, India’s economic growth was reduced to 6.3 percent by the World Bank. However, before that he said 6.7 percent in estimates.

China-Pak will get chili

The report said that the World Bank has reduced the estimate of global economic growth for this year citing trade war. Also, China’s exports increased at the rate of 4.8 percent in May. The reason for this has been that exports to America have declined by about 10 percent compared to the same period of a year ago.

In the World Bank’s Global Economic Possibility Report, it has estimated that during the Financial Year 2025-26, India will remain the world’s fastest-growing major Ecocomi. The World Bank believes that China’s economic growth will grow at the rate of four and a half percent in the year 2025 and four percent in the next four years.

The lowest speed after 2008

According to the latest report of the World Bank’s global economic possibility, there is a possibility of decline in economic growth worldwide this year due to trade tension and policy uncertainties. This speed will be the lowest speed after the recession in 2008.

It has also been said in this report that during the year 2024-45 in India, the speed of growth has slowed down. It partially expresses softening in industrial production. By the way, growth in manufacturing and services sector has been stable and demand in rural areas has made it possible to improve agriculture production.

World bank on india: According to the latest data of the World Bank, as an important achievement under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, India has made progress in reducing its excessive poverty rate in the last decade. The excessive poverty rate in the country has been reduced from 27.1 percent to 5.3 percent in 2022-23 in 2011-12.

A total of 344.47 million people in India were living in extreme poverty during 2011-12, which has come down to about 75.24 million people during 2022-23.

According to World Bank data, 269 million persons were taken out of extreme poverty in about 11 years as a significant progress in India.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh used to live 65 percent of India’s very poor people during 2011-12. At the same time, these states contributed two-thirds of the total decline in excessive poverty by 2022-23.

What was the scale of poverty measurement?

The latest data of the World Bank suggests that the number of people living in excessive poverty has come down from 344.47 million to only 75.24 million. Its assessment is based on three dollars per day international poverty line (using 2021 prices), indicating a widespread decrease in both rural and urban areas.

According to World Bank estimates, on $ 2.15 per day consumption (Back Poverty Line based on 2017), Indians living in excessive poverty are 2.3 percent, which is much lower than 16.2 percent recorded in 2011-12.

According to the latest data, the number of people living below $ 2.15 per day in 2022 was recorded at 33.66 million, which was recorded at 205.93 million in 2011.

Poverty decreased in villages and cities

Statistics also showed that this rapid decline was equally seen, in which rural excessive poverty declined from 18.4 percent to 2.8 percent and urban excessive poverty declined from 10.7 percent to 1.1 percent in the last 11 years. Apart from this, India has also made great progress in reducing multidimensional poverty.

According to the data, the multi-faceted poverty index (MPI) declined from 53.8 percent in 2005-06 to 16.4 percent by 2019-21 and declined further to 15.5 percent in 2022-23.

Focus on removal of poverty in 11 years

On the completion of 11 years of the BJP -led NDA government at the Center, Prime Minister Modi described the focus on important steps, infrastructure and inclusion taken by the Center to get people out of poverty.

Initiatives like PM Awas Yojana, PM Ujjwala Yojana, Jan Dhan Yojana and Ayushman Bharat have increased access to housing, clean cooking fuel, banking and healthcare.

Direct benefits transfer (DBT), digital inclusion and strong rural infrastructure have ensured transparency and rapid delivery of benefits to the end, which has helped over 25 crore people to overcome poverty.

India has achieved great success against poverty in the last decade. According to the World Bank’s latest ‘Power and Equity Brief’ report, between 2011-12 to 2022-23, more than 171 million people, or more than 17 crore people have come out of Extreme Poverty. The report said that those who were living for less than Rs 180 daily, their number has come down from 16.2 percent to 2.3 percent.

Large decline in both village and city

Extreme poverty in villages has come down from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent and 10.7 per cent in cities to 1.1 per cent. The special thing is that now the difference of poverty between rural and urban areas has also reduced considerably, which has come down from 7.7 percent to just 1.7 percent.

India now becomes ‘lower middle income’ country

The report shows that India has also made great progress on the criteria of $ 3.65 per day poverty line. On this basis, poverty has come down from 61.8 percent to 28.1 percent, that is, 378 million people have risen above the poverty line. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh have made the biggest contribution in this. However, even today 54 percent of the country’s very poor come from these states.

Improved at multicolored level

India has not only made economic poverty, but also a great improvement in the multidimensional poverty (MPI) related to education, health and standard of living. The MPI was 53.8 percent in 2005-06, which has come down to 16.4 percent in 2019-21.

Positive signs on employment front

The report also reported that since 2021-22, the employment growth rate has been faster than the working population. The employment rate of women has also improved and the urban unemployment rate has decreased by 6.6 percent, which is the lowest since 2017-18. For the first time, it has been seen that the migration of men has increased from the village to the city, while women’s share in agriculture has increased in rural areas.

Some challenges still remain intact

However, the challenges are not completely over. The unemployment rate among the youth is still 13.3 percent and it reaches 29 percent among the graduate youth. Apart from this, the number of laborers working in the unorganized sector remains very high. There is still a big difference in employment between women and men. Even today more than 23 crore men are financially more powerful than women.

A bad news has come for the Indian economy amidst the ongoing trade war between the US China. In fact, the World Bank has reduced the growth rate for FY 2025-26 from 6.7 per cent to 6.3 per cent, cutting the estimate of India’s economic growth rate.

In fact, the World Bank’s recent South Asia Development Report “Taxing Times” states that the reason for the decline in India’s economic growth rate is the reason for global economic weakness, policy uncertainty and public capital investment.

What has been said in the report

The report said that the increase in FY 2024-25 is likely to be 6.5 percent, which could be reduced to 6.3 percent next year. Private investment can give some support from monetary ease and regulatory reforms, but the uncertainty of global recession and domestic policy can reduce its effect.

IMF also reduced India’s GDP estimate

Earlier, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also reduced India’s growth estimate from 6.5 per cent to 6.2 per cent. The IMF has also revised the global economic estimate, where global growth in 2025 is now expected to be 2.8 per cent, which was 3.3 per cent earlier.

India and China will strengthen world economy

According to IMF data, China (23 per cent) and India (15 per cent) will be the biggest contribution to global growth in the next five years. In contrast, America’s stake is likely to be reduced to 11.3 percent.

According to the report, South Asia’s overall growth rate is estimated to be 5.8 per cent in 2025, which is 0.4 per cent less than the previous estimate. However, in 2026, some improvement has been expected, and it can reach 6.1 percent.

Estimated growth of other major countries

Bangladesh: 3.3 percent in FY24/25, 4.9 percent next year increased

Pakistan: 2.7 percent in FY24/25, 3.1 percent in FY25/26

Sri Lanka: 3.5 percent in FY25, 3.1 percent in FY26

Decline in tax revenue

The report states that the level of tax revenue in South Asian countries is lower than other developing countries. While in other countries it is an average of 24 percent of GDP, it is only 18 percent in South Asia. Especially there has been a decrease in the case of consumption tax, corporate tax and personal income tax.
