Diabetes Treatment: World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on 14 November, the purpose of which is to make people aware about it. Increase in sugar i.e. blood sugar does not happen just by eating sweets. There are many reasons which have nothing to do with sweets or sweets. People keep asking the question, “Why does my sugar increase even though I don’t eat sweets?” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are different reasons for its increase, in which our lifestyle is most responsible. Let us tell you why blood sugar increases even if you do not eat sweets.

According to signs, there are 8 major reasons for increasing blood sugar, in which sugar keeps increasing even without eating sweets. In these-

morning sugar rise

Between 4 and 8 in the morning, the body produces certain hormones, such as cortisol and growth hormone. This tells your liver to make more glucose so you can wake up. If you have diabetes, your body is not able to produce enough insulin, so sugar increases in the morning.

Effect of reduced sugar at night

If sugar levels drop too low at night, the body produces more glucose in the morning to compensate. Because of this, sugar increases as soon as you wake up in the morning. This mostly happens in people taking insulin.

cold, cough or flu

When you have a viral or cold, the body releases stress hormones, which increase blood sugar.

Tension

Too much tension, worry, less sleep, too much heat, cold or sunburn, all these put the body under stress. Due to stress, cortisol increases and this also increases blood sugar.

lack of water in the body

Blood becomes thick when there is less water. Glucose is not high, but due to less water the blood sugar level appears increased. Additionally, excess sugar increases urination, which leads to further dehydration.

Periods and menopause

During these days, estrogen is low, due to which the body does not respond properly to insulin. This may increase blood sugar.

steroid medicines

Steroid medicines given in case of inflammation or any disease, such as prednisone, increase glucose in the liver and reduce the ability of insulin – this increases sugar.

not taking medicine at the right time

If diabetes medicine or insulin is not taken on time, or is taken in less quantity, then sugar increases automatically.

The problem of diabetes is increasing rapidly in India. Now it is not just a disease of the elderly, but the younger generation is also being affected by it. According to the ICMR-IndiaB study, in 2000, 32 million people in India were suffering from diabetes, while today this number has increased to 101 million. The most worrying thing is that young people are also falling prey to type 2 diabetes. The main reason for this is the change in our daily routine and lifestyle. Such as excessive sitting daily routine, obesity, high carbohydrate diet and family history.

Most people know that diabetes can damage eyes, heart, kidneys and nerves. But very few people know that it also affects our mobility and body flexibility. Orthopedic and mobility aids expert of Healthcare Limited, explains that we often associate diabetes with problems of eyes, kidneys and nerves. But it also gradually affects the joints and spine of the body, which reduces flexibility and makes everyday activities difficult.

Connection between high blood sugar and kidney

When blood sugar remains too high in the body, it not only damages the microscopic blood vessels of the eyes and kidneys, but also affects the blood vessels that supply nutrition to the spinal cord.

Uncontrolled sugar does not allow nutrients to reach the spinal discs and vertebral column; over time, this weakens the discs, reduces cushioning capacity and increases the risk of back pain or injury. Studies show that people with diabetes are at increased risk of spinal disc degeneration, which can lead to increased pain in the spine and wrists in the long run.

Flexibility affected by high blood sugar

Having diabetes for a long time can cause a disease in the hands and fingers called diabetic chiroarthropathy. In the beginning it may feel like mild pain or fatigue. Due to this, the flexibility of fingers and hands gradually reduces. Everyday tasks like pressing buttons, holding objects or moving hands become difficult. The main reason behind this is the change in collagen protein. High blood sugar makes collagen stiff and less flexible. Small blood vessels are also affected, due to which hands and skin become hard.

How to maintain mobility and flexibility in high blood sugar

1. Exercise and Yoga – Regular walking, brisk walking, swimming and light exercise

2. Balance diet – Avoid low sugar and high glycemic foods.

3. Orthopedic Support – Special equipment Supportive belts and wraps to protect joints and spine, keep the spine stable and reduce pressure on the back. Ergonomic cushions maintain proper alignment of the spine while sitting and sleeping. Wrist and thumb braces reduce pressure on the hands and wrists.

4. Experts’ opinion – Pairing orthopedic support with regular exercise and the right lifestyle can reduce joint and bone damage caused by high blood sugar.

Nowadays diabetes has become very common. If sugar is not controlled then this disease silently...

Nowadays diabetes has become very common. If sugar is not controlled then this disease silently hollows the entire body. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, uncontrolled diabetes causes serious damage to the nerves and blood vessels, which leads to problems like heart attack, kidney failure and loss of eyesight. The situation is even worse in India.

The 2025 Diabetes Atlas report of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) says that more than 10 crore people in the country are suffering from diabetes and half of them are not even aware of the disease. Let us tell you what problems occur in the body due to not controlling sugar and what effect does it have on life?

This is the first problem

According to Dr. Shailja Patil, a cardiologist at a renowned hospital in Mumbai, high sugar increases cholesterol, blood pressure becomes high and plaque starts accumulating in the arteries. This may cause heart attack or stroke. The risk of heart attack is 4 times higher in patients suffering from diabetes. In the 2025 report of IDF, 40 percent of diabetes patients in India have been reported to have cardiovascular problems. At the same time, CDC’s 2025 report also says that hospitalization rates of heart failure and stroke due to diabetes are continuously increasing.

blood vessels become damaged

Dr. Patil said that the risk of kidney damage increases due to diabetes, because high levels of sugar damage the small blood vessels of the kidneys and protein starts appearing in the urine. This eventually leads to dialysis. In fact, uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of kidney failure by five times. 25% of diabetic patients in India have chronic kidney disease. Initially there is swelling or fatigue, but ignoring it ruins your life.

This problem occurs in nerves

According to the doctor, high blood sugar causes the problem of nerve damage or diabetic neuropathy. Actually, due to high sugar, the nerves get less oxygen and nutrients, which causes tingling, numbness or pain in the hands and feet. This pain gives sleepless nights and the risk of infection increases.

effect on eyesight

Due to diabetes, eye problems start occurring or diabetic retinopathy occurs. Sugar causes the blood vessels in the retina to leak, which can cause blurred vision or blindness. According to Dr. Patil, 20 percent of patients suffer vision loss due to uncontrolled diabetes. ADA’s 2025 report says that 80 percent of cases can be saved by early checkup. According to IDF, 10 million people in India are affected by it.

Risk of nerve damage

The doctor told that the risk of getting foot ulcers also increases due to diabetes. Actually, due to high sugar, nerves get damaged and wounds do not heal due to poor blood flow. This causes infection to spread and amputation occurs. Uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of foot ulcers by 25 times. In such a condition, patients do not feel burning or cutting pain in the legs, which makes the wound serious.

In today’s busy life, a disease like diabetes sneaks up on anyone. According to the report of the World Health Organization (WHO), about 83 crore people around the world are suffering from diabetes and more than half of them do not even know that the sugar level in their body has increased. The situation is very serious in India also. The 2025 Diabetes Atlas report of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) says that more than 10 crore people in India are affected by it and 2.5 crore people are still unaware of it. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, we are telling you about those 5 symptoms which indicate diabetes. If proper precautions are started on time then it can be controlled.

How to take care of yourself?

According to Dr. V. Subramaniam, Chairman of the Endocrinology Department at a renowned hospital in Delhi, diabetes is called a silent killer because it silently damages the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. If you are experiencing symptoms like frequent urination or excessive thirst, fatigue, sudden weight loss and blurred vision, then get a blood test done immediately. These symptoms are mostly seen in type-2 diabetes, which occurs in 90 percent of the cases.

This symptom appears at night

The first symptom of diabetes is frequent urination. Actually, when blood sugar increases, the kidney tries to remove it. Due to this, one has to go to the toilet 4-5 times even at night. According to Dr. Subramaniam, patients often say that they cannot sleep throughout the night because they are unable to control urination. This is an early sign, ignoring which can result in kidney damage. According to the IDF report, if checkup is not done on time, 40 percent of diabetic patients in India develop kidney problems.

Feeling thirsty again and again is also dangerous

The second symptom is feeling strange thirst. Actually, due to increase in sugar the body gets dehydrated and the more water you drink, the more thirsty you feel. Dr. Subramaniam says that one always feels thirsty in summer, but even in cold weather, if you have to drink water frequently, then get your sugar checked. We saw in a recent study that this symptom first appeared in 70 percent of the patients. It is also said in the 2025 guidelines of ADA (American Diabetes Association) that increased thirst is a signal of hyperglycemia.

If you feel tired continuously then get checked

In diabetes, cells are not able to convert sugar into energy, due to which one feels tired all the time. According to Dr. Subramaniam, patients think that it is work-related fatigue, but it is due to diabetes. WHO study also shows that fatigue due to untreated diabetes doubles the risk of heart attack.

Pay attention to sudden weight loss

During type-1 diabetes, weight starts reducing rapidly because the body starts producing energy by breaking down fat and muscles. Dr. Subramaniam told that weight loss of 4-5 kg in a month is not normal. This is a sign of insulin deficiency. In the latest report of IDF, it was said that there are 10 million Type-1 cases in India, in which this symptom is prominent.

Be alert if your vision is blurry

The fifth symptom of diabetes is blurred vision. Actually, due to high sugar, the lens of the eyes gets swollen, due to which the vision becomes blurred. Dr. Subramaniam says that 20 percent of patients become blind due to diabetic retinopathy. The ADA report of 2025 says that 80 percent of cases can be saved by early checkup. This symptom is increasing rapidly in children also.

How should one avoid?

Dr. Subramaniam advises that if you want to control diabetes, then abstain from sugar, flour, processed food and red meat. Eat fiber rich things instead. IDF’s report published in 2025 states that 58 percent of cases can be prevented through a healthy diet. Apart from this, squeeze lemon in lukewarm water and drink it as soon as you wake up in the morning. Take oats, porridge or multigrain paratha for breakfast. Have breakfast between 7 and 8 in the morning, which contains 300 calories. Among fruits, choose apple, guava or papaya, eat less banana. Have brown rice, lentils, green vegetables and salad in lunch. Take only 2-3 chapattis. Eat a handful of almonds or sprouts as an evening snack.
