Europe is in the grip of record breaking heat these days. This severe heatwave, which started from South-Western Europe, has now spread to Eastern Europe and is creating new temperature records every day. The mercury has reached above 40 degrees Celsius in many countries including France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic and Lithuania. This heat wave has so far killed at least 1,300 people in Europe, with more than 1,000 deaths recorded in France alone. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that this figure may increase further. Because complete reporting of deaths in hospitals and homes is still pending…

Most serious situation in France: 1000 deaths in three days

The most terrible form of this heatwave has been seen in France. France’s public health agency Cent Public France announced on Sunday (June 28) that more than a thousand deaths have been recorded in the country since June 24. These deaths mainly occurred during the three hottest days of the last week.

More than 85% of these deaths are elderly people above 65 years of age. Paris and Ile-de-France areas have been most affected. The most troubling thing is that among these deaths, the number of deaths occurring in homes was 40% more than normal. That means people could not reach hospitals and died in their own homes.

The French Health Agency has warned that these are preliminary numbers. This number may increase further after complete reporting of deaths in hospitals, nursing homes and homes. At least 74 people have also died by drowning in rivers, lakes and other bodies of water during the heatwave in France.

France’s national temperature index reached 29.8 degrees Celsius, the highest since measurements began in 1947. 44 crore people of France (almost the entire population of the country) are under heat alert.

WHO warning: 1,300 deaths and the arrival of ‘silent killer’

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus posted on social media platform X that more than 1,300 deaths have been recorded across Europe since June 21. He warned that heat stress is often called the ‘silent killer’ because it kills silently, without making any big noise.

Tedros said, ‘Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world, which is warming at twice the rate of the global average. Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds of people have died, schools are closed and power grids are collapsing. He also said that heatwaves that used to occur once in a generation are now occurring almost every year.

Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average. Right now 150 million people are living under extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools are shut, grids are buckling.

— Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (@DrTedros) June 28, 2026

WHO has appealed to European countries to implement effective ‘Heat-Health Action Plan’. WHO and Europe recently presented their new heat-health action plan guidance in Berlin. According to WHO, in the last 4 years, more than two lakh people have died due to heat in Europe alone.

Fight for AC in summer, political debate heated up

Due to the scorching heat, the demand for air conditioners and fans is skyrocketing in many European countries including France and Italy. Most homes in Europe are not designed to withstand extreme heat. AC rates are very low here.

Sales of fans and ACs have increased rapidly at big retailers like Carrefour and Amazon. Technicians are receiving so many orders for installation that it is difficult to meet the demand. Mitsubishi Electric told Reuters that air conditioner sales have been very strong in Europe, especially in France, Spain, the UK and Germany.

Right-wing leader Marine Le Pen is advocating the installation of air conditioners with subsidies on a large scale to protect the elderly and vulnerable groups. At the same time, the Green Party, which was traditionally against AC, has also admitted that now air conditioning has become necessary to some extent.

Left parties argue that large-scale use of ACs will put too much pressure on the electricity system and will make the climate crisis worse by increasing hot air in cities. This debate has become a big issue ahead of the 2027 French presidential elections.

Temperature records broken in Eastern Europe

This heat has now spread to Eastern Europe and is creating new records every day. On June 28:

Lithuania: In the country’s southern city Druskininkai, the temperature was recorded at 36.3 degrees Celsius, which is the highest temperature so far in the month of June. The previous record was 35.7 degrees Celsius.

Republica Checa: The temperature in Doksany, north of the capital Prague, was recorded at 41.1 degrees Celsius. This became a new record for the second consecutive day.

Poland: The temperature in Slubice city was recorded at 40.5 degrees Celsius. If this figure is officially confirmed, it will be the highest temperature ever recorded in the country. The capital Warsaw recorded 37.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city’s 2013 record.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), new cases are being reported along with increased surveillance to combat Ebola. World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that more than 900 suspected cases have been reported so far. Of these, 101 cases are confirmed. This disease is spreading most in Ituri province of DRC. Tedros said that about 5 million people live in this area and there has been a conflict going on here for a long time. Of these, one in four people is in need of humanitarian assistance and one in five has left their home and been displaced.

Ebola alert raised in DRC-Uganda

Tedros said in a post on the social media platform ‘X’ that people are continuously fleeing due to violence, including health workers and people helping. Due to this, there is a lot of difficulty in identifying Ebola patients and doing contact tracing. If the disease is not caught on time, treatment also becomes difficult. He also said that due to fear and insecurity, trust among people is decreasing, due to which the work has become more difficult. The WHO chief said WHO and humanitarian health partners were still present in many areas of Ituri, including some very remote and unsafe places. People there are struggling not only with Ebola but also with many other diseases. Tedros said that it is very important to provide full health services there, so that the immediate needs of the people are met and at the same time trust is also built, which is very important to fight Ebola.

On May 16, 2026, Tedros said that this outbreak of Ebola virus in DRC and Uganda has been declared internationally as ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ (PHEIC). On May 22, WHO increased its risk level to very high at the national level, ‘high’ at the regional level and ‘low’ at the global level. According to WHO, Ebola is a serious disease that can often be fatal and it affects humans and some animals (such as monkeys). This virus usually spreads to humans from wild animals (bats, porcupines and some monkeys). After this, it can also spread from person to person through contact with an infected person’s blood, sweat, body fluids or things that come in contact with him (such as clothes, bedding).

Africa Ebola outbreak: Africa is once again facing the great threat of Ebola virus. This time the cause for concern is the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccine is available yet. The rapidly increasing cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda have alerted health agencies around the world. According to reports, hundreds of suspected cases have been reported and many people have also died. The biggest concern is that this virus is now reaching densely populated areas, due to which the risk of spreading to other countries has also increased.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC have considered this situation a serious health emergency. As of now, it is not clear how much effect the vaccine for the Jere strain of Ebola will have on the Bundibugyo strain. For this reason, the world is now busy in the race to prepare a new vaccine.

India has a big role in the race to make vaccine

In this difficult time, India’s big vaccine company Serum Institute of India is going to play an important role. This Pune-based company is preparing to make a new vaccine in collaboration with Oxford University and CEPI. This vaccine will be based on the ChAdOx platform, which was also used in the Covishield vaccine during Covid-19. Serum Institute says that it already has such technology and machines with the help of which vaccine doses can be prepared in a very short time.

According to the company, if everything goes well, initial production can be started within 20 to 30 days. Just as India had given a large quantity of vaccines to the world during the Covid pandemic, similarly India can now emerge as a reliable partner in the Ebola crisis too. Besides, it also shows the medical and biotech strength of India.

Also read: Jabalpur Paneer Incident: Children reached ICU after eating paneer in dinner! Before buying cheese in summer, check its quality like this.

Challenge of time and security before scientists

At present, the biggest challenge facing scientists is time. Two vaccine candidates are being worked on for the Bundibugyo strain. The first is based on rVSV technology, which uses the same technology as the already existing Ervebo vaccine, but its problem is that its dose is not yet available and it may take several months to prepare. On the other hand, the specialty of ChAdOx platform is its fast production capacity because it has been used on a large scale during the time of Covid, hence its factory system is already ready. However, it also has a weakness. Till now, this vaccine has not been fully tested against Bundibugyo virus on animals or humans. In such a situation, health agencies will have to take a very careful decision whether to give priority to speedy testing or wait for a longer trial. This decision can decide the safety of millions of people in the future.

India became the hope of the world

This Ebola crisis spreading in Africa is a warning to the whole world that the epidemic can come back any time. Additionally, it becomes even more difficult to prevent disease in areas suffering from conflict and poverty. At such a time, India’s entry has emerged as a new ray of hope. If Serum Institute and its partners are successful in preparing a safe and effective vaccine soon, it can save the lives of thousands of people. At the same time, it will be proved that India has the ability to help not only in its own health crisis but also in the health crisis of the entire world. The next few months will be very important, because they will decide how quickly the world can stop this new Ebola threat.

Is The World Ready For The Next Pandemic: After Covid-19, the world thought that preparations to deal with the next pandemic would be better than before, but the new report has once again raised concerns. Amid new outbreaks of Ebola in parts of Central Africa, as well as the growing threat of diseases such as hantavirus, monkeypox and bird flu, a global report warns that the world is becoming more vulnerable than ever to future pandemics.

The risk of infection is increasing rapidly around the world.

According to the report of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, an independent organization formed with the support of the World Health Organization and the World Bank, the risk of infectious diseases is now increasing faster than before. The report said that compared to the last ten years, the country and the health system have become less capable of recovering from the epidemic. This warning comes at a time when the World Health Organization has declared the new outbreak of Ebola spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as an international public health emergency. This time, the less understood Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has emerged, which has further increased the concern.

Why is the risk of infection spreading rapidly?

The report A World on the Edge: Priorities for a Pandemic-Resilient Future, released during the 79th World Health Assembly, said that investments in preparedness to deal with the pandemic are proving to be far less than the rapidly increasing threats. According to the report, increasing geopolitical tensions, environmental disturbances related to climate change, increasing global mobility and reduction in international development funding are weakening world health security.

What were the things discussed in the report?

The report reviewed major health emergencies such as the Ebola outbreak of 2014-16 and 2019-20, COVID-19 and monkeypox. It found that after Covid, new health systems and plans were made, but the global capacity to deal with the epidemic still remains highly uneven. The most worrying thing came to light regarding the access to vaccines and medicines. According to the report, it took almost two years for the monkeypox vaccine to reach poor countries, which was more delay than the Covid vaccine. The board warned that the world is moving backwards in terms of equitable access to vaccines, testing and treatment.

The report also said that the pandemic is no longer just a health crisis, but is also affecting democratic institutions and people’s trust. During both Covid and Ebola, political polarization, attacks on scientific institutions and rapid spread of misinformation were seen. Its effects persist long after the pandemic is over.

Read this also- Ebola Virus: How dangerous is the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, how much danger does it pose to India?

Why is the report important for India?

This report is considered very important for India also. India’s dense population, rapidly growing cities and large-scale internal migration, which has suffered one of the world’s largest Covid outbreaks, increase the risk of future pandemics. Public health experts have already warned that there is a need to further strengthen the disease surveillance system, rural health infrastructure and emergency funding system in the country.

The cruise ship MV Hondius, affected by the Hantavirus outbreak, reached its final destination Rotterdam on Monday (May 18, 2026) after spending more than a month at sea, where now only its crew members are present on the ship.

However, earlier this month, the MV Hondius, a cruise ship carrying around 150 passengers and crew members from 23 countries, had to be quarantined following an outbreak of Hantavirus. Three people traveling on this Dutch flag ship have died so far due to this virus. Which included a Dutch couple and a German woman. Hantavirus infection was also confirmed in two of these people.

At the same time, after Canadian authorities confirmed another case of Hantavirus on Sunday (May 17, 2026), the number of cases of infection among cruise ship passengers has increased to 11.

What did WHO DG say about Hantavirus?

Earlier, the Director General (DG) of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had said regarding this virus that there is no indication that this (Hantavirus) is the beginning of any big problem, but along with this he also said that in view of the long incubation period of the virus, more cases may emerge in the coming weeks.

Why did WHO DG thank Spain?

Addressing the World Health Assembly held in Switzerland, WHO DG Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thanked Spanish authorities for helping deal with the Hantavirus outbreak. He said that Spain had allowed the cruise ship MV Hondius to reach the Canary Islands and had also coordinated the process of sending the people on board back to their countries.

The Central African country Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is once again battling the outbreak of Ebola virus infection. Congolese health officials said that this time the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak is Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, where new treatment centers have been set up to treat the affected people. Officials said the aim of these centers is to reduce the pressure on hospitals handling the increasing number of patients.

Congo’s health minister gave information about the situation

According to the BBC report, DR Congo’s Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said while talking to the news agency Associated Press on Sunday (May 17, 2026), ‘This morning we have brought all the tents, so that treatment centers can be set up. We know that hospitals are already under pressure due to the increasing number of patients. I want to tell the people here that at present 59 patients are being actively treated, but we are still preparing the treatment centers so that we can further increase our capabilities.

What did the World Health Organization representative say??

Anne Ansia, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in DR Congo, said, ‘This equipment is part of the initial response and will not be enough. We have evacuated our entire stock present in Kinshasa and sent it to Congo. Now we are preparing a C-130 cargo aircraft, which is currently in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. It is being loaded in our depot there. After this it will go to Kinshasa and deliver more equipment there.

2300 people died due to virus in 2018-20

According to the BBC report, DR Congo has a lot of experience in dealing with Ebola, as this is the 17th outbreak of the virus in the country so far. Ebola was first identified in Congo in 1976 and it is believed that it was spread by bats. The country saw the worst outbreak of this virus between 2018 and 2020, in which about 2,300 people died.

America has completed the process of formally separating from the World Health Organization (WHO). This decision started from the first day of President Donald Trump’s second term and has now been completed on January 22, 2026.

America stopped funding of WHO

The Trump administration had announced its exit from WHO by issuing an executive order on January 20, 2025. Under this, America stopped all funding of WHO, recalled all its employees and contractors from Geneva headquarters and WHO offices around the world. Now America is no longer a member of WHO. The American flag has also been removed from outside the WHO headquarters in Geneva.

The Trump government says that WHO made big mistakes in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization did not make necessary reforms and acted under political pressure from some member countries. America will now maintain only limited contact with WHO so that the process of separation can be completed. The government has clearly said that America will not return to WHO in future.

America was a member of WHO for 78 years

America was a founding member of WHO and remained a member for 78 years from 1948. This was the largest funding country. The United States used to pay an average of $111 million in membership fees and more than $570 million in voluntary contributions each year. Now after separation, WHO has suffered a big financial blow. America owes WHO 130 million to 278 million dollars. However, in some reports it is said to be $260 million. But America has refused to pay the dues.

America’s separation has a negative impact on global health.

WHO coordinates worldwide to fight diseases like smallpox, Ebola and polio. Distributes technical assistance, vaccines and medicines to poor countries. Creates guidelines for hundreds of diseases. This decision may have a negative impact on global health.

Experts say that this will weaken the global ability to fight new diseases. American scientists and pharmaceutical companies will also find it difficult to get health data from other countries, which is necessary for early warning of the epidemic. Experts at Georgetown University, Lawrence Gostin, have called it ‘the most disastrous presidential decision of his life’.

Trump separated from 70 organizations in 1 year

This decision is part of the larger policy of the Trump administration. In the first year of the second term, America has separated from about 70 international organizations and agreements. These include 31 UN-related institutions, including the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Economic Commission for Africa, Asia, Latin America and West Asia, International Law Commission, International Trade Centre, Peacebuilding Commission and Fund, UN Women, UNFCCC, UN Population Fund, UN Water, UN University and many more.

America has also withdrawn from 35 non-UN organizations and Paris climate agreements. These include many entities including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), International Renewable Energy Agency, International Solar Alliance, International Union for Conservation of Nature, and Global Forum on Migration and Development. The government says that these organizations promote the ‘woke agenda’, which is against American interests. However, the US will remain in the UN Security Council, the World Food Program (WFP) and the UNHCR, as these are considered essential for national security and humanitarian aid.

These days, Pakistan is facing such a wave of HIV infection, which has exposed the weakness of the health system. According to the data shared by WHO and UNAIDS in the program organized on World AIDS Day, there has been an unusual increase in new cases of HIV in the country in the last decade. While about 16 thousand new cases were reported in the year 2010, this number will increase to 38 in 2024. This increase is being considered a big warning for Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Health Ministry has also acknowledged that HIV infection can no longer be controlled through government efforts alone. Director General of the Ministry, Dr. Ayesha Isani said that the community, doctors, paramedical staff and all health institutions need to work together to adopt safe medical practices. He also said that carelessness in injections and blood transfusion is the biggest reason for spreading the infection and it is very important to make the public aware about the disease and its prevention.

A large number of infected people do not know about the disease

About 3.5 lakh people in the country are infected with HIV, but the surprising thing is that a large population of them is not even aware of their disease. The situation among children is more worrying. While in the year 2010, about 530 cases were identified in young children, in 2023 this number increased to 1800. This means that the infection is spreading rapidly within homes and communities.

Treatment arrangements increased but very less as compared to the need

The number of patients taking antiretroviral therapy i.e. ART treatment has increased in Pakistan, but it is still far less in proportion to the need. While in 2013 only a little more than 6000 patients were on treatment, in 2024 this number has reached close to 55000. The number of ART centers has also now reached around 95. Despite this, very few people get their disease checked and the proportion of people taking treatment is also very low. The figures of patients with viral load under control are even weaker.

unsafe medical practices

Investigations conducted in many areas of the country show that the biggest sources of spread of infection are unsafe injections, repeatedly used syringes and blood transfusions without testing. Especially in districts like Larkana, Taunsa, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Naushahro Firoz and Mirpur Khas, several outbreaks of HIV were reported and most of these infected children were children. These incidents have raised questions on the medical system of Pakistan.

Huge shortage in treatment of women and children

If pregnant women infected with HIV do not get adequate treatment, the risk of infection in newborn children also increases. In Pakistan only a small number still undergo medical monitoring during pregnancy. Same is the situation of those children who are already infected. Very few of these children receive regular treatment.

WHO warning

WHO’s Pakistan representative Dr. Luo Dapeng said that if timely action is not taken, the situation may become more serious. He also said that Pakistan will have to increase resources domestically and internationally and strengthen programs related to prevention and treatment, so that no adult or child is deprived of treatment.

There has been an uproar in India over the death of 22 children due to drinking cough syrup. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also raised questions in this matter. He has asked the Indian authorities whether the cough syrup which has led to such incidents has been sent to other countries also.

WHO has raised these questions at a time when many concerns have been expressed regarding drinking cough syrup. Investigation has revealed that Diethylene Glycol i.e. DG has been found in excess in cough syrup. Apart from this, high quantity of Ethylene Glycol (EG) has also been found.

WHO will issue alert
After the response from the Indian authorities, a decision will be taken by WHO regarding issuing Global Medical Products Alert. Such alerts are issued by the global organization for those products in which any flaw has been found and there is a danger in their consumption.

According to the information received so far, 22 children have died in Madhya Pradesh after drinking cough syrup and the condition of 5 is critical. Apart from this, there have been 3 deaths in different districts of Rajasthan also. Sources say that the World Health Organization has asked whether such cough syrups have been sent to other countries also.

Drugs controller wrote letter to states and union territories
It is a routine procedure from the United Nations to ask like this. Meanwhile, the Drugs Controller of India has written a letter to all the states and union territories and ordered that adequate checking be done before sending any pharma product to the market. The agency has said that deficiencies have been found in inspection at some places.

The agency has asked all the producers to thoroughly test each batch and only then send it for sale in the market. The owner of the pharma company has also been arrested in this case.
