MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship, reached Vizhinjam International Cottage (Kerala) on Monday morning. This ship has reached a South Asian port for the first time. This moment is glorious for this port dedicated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the nation on 2 May 2025. MSC Irina will stand at Vijhinjam port till Tuesday.

The ship has been designed to strengthen trade, especially between Asia and Europe, so that transport of containers can be easier.

Why the arrival of MSC Irina is so special?

The ship is the highest container -carrying ship ever, which has overtaken its predecessor Oocl Spain with 150 Teus more capacity. It is not only large in size, but it is equipped with energy-saving techniques, which reduces carbon emissions by 4 percent.

Vizhinjam port is becoming a global hub

Vijhinjam Port has recently hosted other Icon-Class ships such as MSC Türkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini. Now the entry of MSC Irina has included it among the most modern ports in South Asia.

Big expansion of adani ports

The entire operation was conducted under Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (Apsez), which is the largest port operator in India. APSEZ has now become an integrated transport utility to solve not just a port company but “from port to customer” logistics.

It has 15 large ports and terminals in India and the company is also operating in Israel, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Due to this, India’s stake in global logistics is increasing rapidly.
