Congress MP P Chidambaram has expressed surprise over the statement of Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara, in which he had talked about taking bulldozer action on buildings built with the money earned from drug smuggling in the state.

Demolishing houses without due process is illegal – Chidambaram

Former Finance Minister of the country Chidambaram posted on social media platform X and said that Congress bulldozer is against justice. He appealed to the Karnataka government not to go against the view of the Supreme Court and adopt ‘illegal route’ regarding demolition of houses.

The Congress MP wrote, ‘I am worried by the statement of Karnataka Home Minister in which he has said that bulldozers can be used to demolish the houses of drug smugglers. I hope this report is wrong. The Supreme Court has made it clear that demolition of houses without due process is illegal and will violate the fundamental and human rights of shelter to other members of the family.

He further said, ‘Furthermore, the Congress Party believes that the policy of bulldozer justice adopted in Uttar Pradesh is wrong, illegal and unjust. A Congress ruled state like Karnataka should not follow the illegal path of Uttar Pradesh.

What did the Karnataka Home Minister say in the Assembly?

Earlier on Thursday, G. Parameshwara had said in the assembly that the government would demolish buildings built with money obtained from drug trafficking.

P Chidambaram has referred to the comment of the Supreme Court bench headed by CJI BR Gavai in November 2024. In which the bench had said that if a bulldozer is used on a house because the person living in the house is an accused or has been convicted in some crime, it is equivalent to imposing punishment on the entire family. The top court had said, ‘In our view, our constitutional system and criminal jurisprudence will never allow this.’

Amidst the ongoing tussle within the Congress over the Chief Minister’s post in Karnataka, Home Minister G. God has made a big statement. He said that if the Congress high command decides to make DK Shivakumar the Chief Minister, he will completely accept it. This statement is being considered as one of the strongest signals coming from the Siddaramaiah camp.

What did God say?
While talking to a media channel, he said, ‘When I am asked about my desires for the post of Chief Minister, I answer that I am in this race. But if the party high command approves a transition and DK Shivakumar becomes the chief minister, we will accept it. He also said that if the transition was approved by the party, it would be smooth and peaceful.

He himself is interested in the post of CM.
Parameshwara reiterated that he also aspires to become the Chief Minister and the high command is fully aware of his contribution to the party. He made it clear that the final decision is in the hands of the party high command. He also described Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as a ‘suitable candidate’, but said he had no knowledge of any agreement between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar.

Struggle continues over leadership in Karnataka
At present there is speculation about the post of Chief Minister in Karnataka. The tussle revolves around the alleged power-sharing agreement between Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. Everyone is waiting for the decision of the party high command, which will decide the direction of the state’s politics.

DK Shivkumar’s suggestive statement
Earlier, amid the ongoing tussle over the post of Chief Minister in Karnataka, Congress State President and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had given a symbolic statement. He said that ‘the power of words is the power of the world and keeping a promise is the greatest power.’ His statement is being seen as an indication of the demand for change of power after Siddaramaiah and the political pressure associated with it.
