The Taliban arrested four youths in Afghanistan because they were dressed like characters from the famous Netflix series ‘Peaky Blinders’. The Taliban has called it a violation of Islamic values. This incident happened in western Herat province. All the arrested youth are around 20 years of age.
Caught because it went viral on social media
The videos and photos of the four youths had gone viral on social media. Among these, four Afghan youths were seen wearing tailored suits, waistcoats, flat caps and overcoats. He was roaming in the city on foot and in cars with a serious face. He was also seen smoking a cigar-like cigarette, an imitation of the series’ main character Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy).
Opposition to foreign culture in Afghanistan
The Taliban said that these youth were promoting foreign culture. Therefore, he has been sent to a rehabilitation center, where a program has been started to improve his behavior and teach him Islamic values. Saif Khaibar, spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, said, ‘We are Muslims and Afghans by the grace of Allah. We have our own religion, culture and values. We have saved this country from the spread of corrupt cultures by making great sacrifices and will protect it even now.
He further said that the behavior of these youth was not in accordance with Islamic values and Afghan culture.
Dress code strict in Afghanistan
There are strict dress codes and rules of public behavior for both men and women under Taliban rule. Men are required to grow long beards and wear traditional clothing, such as salwar kameez, cap or turban. It is advisable to avoid western clothes like T-shirts and pants.
