The ongoing peace talks in Istanbul between Pakistan and Afghan Taliban have failed. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed that the talks have ended without any success.
CNN-News18 quoted sources as saying that Khawaja Asif has said that the Taliban regime is not giving written guarantees to stop cross-border terrorism and also the mediators involved in this process are now fed up with the deadlock. Asif said, “The talks in Istanbul have failed.” He further said that he does not believe that another round of mediation will happen anytime soon.
Khwaja Asif accused Taliban
Khawaja Asif accused the Taliban of not being serious about tackling terrorism in the region and stressed that Islamabad will continue to use all necessary options to protect its people and sovereignty. Let us tell you that these failed talks took place amid increasing tension on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Earlier this week, there was firing between Pakistan and Afghan armies near the Chaman border, breaking the temporary ceasefire. During that time officials from both sides were in Istanbul for peace talks.
Afghanistan blames Pakistan
According to the report of news agency AFP, Afghan military sources have claimed that Pakistan used light and heavy weapons and targeted civilian areas. Afghan forces reportedly opened fire out of respect for the ongoing talks. On the other hand, Islamabad denied the allegations and insisted that the firing was initiated by Afghanistan and Pakistani forces responded in a restrained and responsible manner.
Pakistan’s Information Ministry said in a post on X that we strongly reject the claims circulated by the Afghan side regarding today’s incident on the Pak-Afghan border in Chaman.
