The campaign for the general elections to be held in Bangladesh on 12 February ended on Tuesday (10 February 2026). In the last hours of the election campaign, leaders of different parties made many promises to the public. Many opinion polls have claimed that there is a tough contest between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led alliance and the Jamaat-e-Islami led alliance. The ban on campaigning came into effect from Tuesday morning under the Parliamentary Election Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates Rules, 2025.
Election campaign stopped in Bangladesh
After the distribution of election symbols in Bangladesh, political parties and candidates started their election campaign from January 22. Meanwhile, different estimates have been made in the opinion polls conducted by different institutions in Bangladesh. According to the report of Dhaka Tribune, three major surveys published in the last two days have presented different pictures of the election environment.
Who will form the government between BNP and Jamaat?
A survey by Dhaka-based Eminence Associates for Social Development (EASD) claimed that 41,500 people were interviewed across all 300 constituencies using the primary sampling unit (PSU) method. Speaking at the Krishibid Institution in Dhaka on Monday (February 9, 2026), EASD Chief Executive Officer Shamim Haider Talukdar said that the BNP-led alliance is expected to get around 208 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance may get 46 seats in the upcoming elections.
A survey by Bangladesh’s International Institute of Law and Diplomacy (IILD) predicted a tough contest. In this, the Jamaat led alliance is expected to get 105 seats and the BNP led block is expected to get 101 seats. Apart from this, in the third survey released by Nationalist Research Cell (NRC), a platform of alumni of Dhaka University, BNP has been predicted to get a huge victory with 77 percent popular votes and 220 parliamentary seats.
Mohammed Yunus appeals to the public
Bangladesh’s interim government chief Mohammad Yunus appealed to the people of his country to vote yes in the referendum to be held simultaneously with the general elections on February 12 and support his proposed reform package. The Yunus administration has been waging an active campaign for the past several weeks to garner public support for the 84-point reform package.
